  • Santa's coming to town!

    Allen V. Stock|Dec 19, 2022

Jolly old St. Nicholas himself made an appearance at the Carrington Youth Center to hear area kids' wishes of toys and goodies from his sleigh before he heads back to the North Pole with Rudolph and his reindeer team for the big Christmas Eve delivery run. Here, he gets a warm smile from a young admirer thrilled to see the red-clad holiday icon....

  • The little girl that changed my thoughts

    Allen V. Stock|Dec 12, 2022

By the time this reaches homes and newsstands this weekend, I'll have had a meeting with the professionals at one of the state's largest medical centers. I've been meeting with them for months getting ready for this surgery I was scheduled to have on Thursday. They're going in to repair my "ticker". I've know for a while there was a problem and now after tests, the surgery is set. And, to say the least, I am ready for that to happen. If not to rid my body of certain food groups, then the...

  • Shoot low, sheriff, they're riding Shetlands

    Allen V. Stock|Nov 21, 2022

I don’t know why, but this past year I’ve gotten hooked on the TV reruns of Gunsmoke. And, the reason is easy to explain. I have cut out watching the news, most of which is on the national scene, but many nights I cancel out Fargo stations as well. Lots of it, if not most of the stories coming out of the east concern robberies, shootings, beatings, and stories you find on most national and small city stations. On the national scene, I have trouble watching and listening to what’s happe...

  • The little box that makes a difference

    Allen V. Stock|Nov 14, 2022

Few things in the area of meetings or events surprise me these days, especially after some 60 years or more of attending just about all types of gatherings involving people and their programs. But this one did . . . the situation/gathering at the Open Season Lodge in Sheyenne on Saturday, October 29. It was the day set aside to fill shoeboxes. These are boxes filled with clothes, goodies, personal items, fun things, dolls and small blankets. Just a host of items that children around the globe...

  • Foster Museum has photo negatives

    Allen V. Stock|Apr 18, 2022

There are many, many photograph negatives available free of charge at the Foster County Historical Society Museum. Society Secretary Cathy Paulson said last week, "There are literally thousands of 5" x 7" negatives from the old Carlson studio," which was housed in the upper story of the current Foster County Senior Citizen Building, just south of Central Pharmacy. "They are all marked on the side as to who paid the bill for the actual photographs and we are not sure of all the years they were...

  • The not-so-calm before the storm

    Allen V. Stock|Apr 18, 2022

This is being written last Tuesday as the first of the many inches of snow predicted begins to fall. It reminds us of other April storms that have drawn our attention away from spring. And it looks like this is going to be a doozy of a storm if the weathermen all say it is to happen. All of which places us weekly newspapers in winter storm areas in a predicament. We only have so much time and much to do. . . with hopes of fielding another consecutive issue for our subscribers. So, with that...

  • Music, as in the past, is still a therapy tool

    Allen V. Stock|Feb 7, 2022

There's an older, nice piano in our home today. I look at it every day and it brings back memories of many, many years ago. The piano was moved back home after several of our grandchildren took many years of lessons and became accomplished piano players, along with their mother. Since they all have moved on, once again the piano sits in our living room. I look at it because there was a time when I took piano lessons as a young seventh or eighth grader. It was maybe a year or two of lessons...
