  • CHS girls breeze past Ellendale, Barnes Co. North

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 17, 2022

Defense, defense and more defense proved more than enough for the Carrington Cardinals to maintain their District 5 leadership in two games covering last week’s period. The Cards held both Ellendale and Barnes County North under 20 points, with CHS taking a 54-13 road win on January 6 over the former and 68-16 in the East Gym over the latter last Monday night, January 10. Said Coach Andy Braaten of the two games, “We were able to press [Ellendale] into many turnovers and convert some lay...

  • Thunder hit rough patch, drop pair to Loboes, Rebels

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 17, 2022

Six wins in seven games to start the season for the M-P-B Thunder girls’ basketball team have been a good sign, but the team faced their first extended spell of adversity this season in two Region 3 games on January 6 and 10. Coach Cory Mack’s girls fell to the LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes, 55-39, and ran into the red-hot E-K-M Rebels last Monday. The Rebs, ranked eighth in the state in the January 10 poll, took down the Thunder by a score of 56-29. Two of M-P-B’s defeats have come to E-K-M...

  • Roney's 39 gives Oakes big 30-point win over Titans

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 17, 2022

The Griggs/Midkota Titans had no defensive answer for Oakes junior guard Laikyn Roney. The Tornadoes’ sharpshooter broke OHS’ single-game scoring record with 39 points, 37 of those in the first three quarters, as the natural disasters took care of the Titans in Cooperstown, 71-41, last Monday evening, January 10. Oakes, who improved to 3-0 in District 5 and 7-3 in all games, also benefited from good games by Brianna Schmitz (eight points) and Abby Cox and Emma Muggli (seven apiece.) The Tit...

  • Titans get big league win over CHS

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 17, 2022

Rookie Griggs/Midkota Head Coach Kyle Mehus got his first career win at the seventh place game of the Stutsman County Tournament in Jamestown. He did that one better, though, with a 50-37 victory for the Titans over rival Carrington last Tuesday night, January 11, in Cooperstown, to earn a District 5 triumph for the first time. And it was the long ball that helped put G-M over the hump. Griggs/Midkota erupted for nine threes to account for nearly half of their 19 field goals. Three of those...

  • Keep fish caught in deep water

    Jan 17, 2022

North Dakota Game and Fish Department fisheries biologists are encouraging ice anglers to keep fish caught from deep waters. Catch-and-release fishing, no matter the time of year, is discouraged for fish caught in 30 feet or more, because fish reeled in from those depths have a greater chance of dying if released. Fish caught in deep water won’t likely survive because of the extreme change in water pressure, which causes the swim bladder to expand. Fish can no longer control their balance in the water column when this happens. Other internal i...

  • Three place from CHS at Rotary

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 17, 2022

Thanks to three top-eight finishers, the Carrington Cardinal wrestlers finished in 17th place overall at the large school-dominated Bismarck Rotary Tournament, held Friday and Saturday, January 7-8, at the Event Center. A pair of South Dakota schools, Watertown and Rapid City Stevens, occupied the top two team finishes with just two points separating the Arrows from the Raiders (205.5 to 203.5). Sidney, Montana was third with 187, and Bismarck and Minot rounded out the top five. The Cards had...

  • Open classes fatal to Cards at HWC Duals

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 17, 2022

Being down in numbers to fill lineup slots, everything had to go Carrington’s way in contested weights to salvage any form of victory in a triangular dual meet with HWC and Central Cass Thursday, January 6, in Harvey. Even with four forfeits to the Hornets and five to the Squirrels, the Cards lost both duals by a combined tally of just five points, taking a bitter 37-36 loss to the home team and tasting defeat in 40-36 fashion to the eastern North Dakota school. Taking wins in both duals were T...

  • Hornet boys split games vs. Rugby, M-L-S

    Lane Moellenkamp|Jan 17, 2022

The HWC Hornet boys’ basketball team’s record now sits at 5-2 overall, but it very well could have been 6-1 if not for a heartbreaking one-point loss in their first game of the week’s slate. The Hornets dropped a narrow decision to the Rugby Panthers, 51-50, but came back for a 39-32 win against Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood last Monday. Both games were non-region games. Rugby 51, HWC 50 The Hornets jumped out early but in the end it was the Panthers holding on for the single point victory over HWC in Harvey on Friday, January 7. Harvey-Wells County...

Outdoor notes: *Ice is never completely safe. Avoid areas with vegetation, moving water, pressure ridges, and springs.
