  • Mya's story

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 20, 2023

+++ "I don't think I could count the times I was so down on myself and cried wondering why God has to make me hurt so bad and what purpose do I have here. To numb the pain, I did drugs, because when I was high – there was no feeling." - Mya Schiele, personal journal entry +++ From all appearances, Mya was your typical American teenager, with all the emotional highs and lows that come with those sometimes-turbulent formative years. The 2020 CHS graduate was full of love, kindness and vigor for h...

To make matters worse, the Penrose...

  • District court may take over municipal judge duties

    Leasa A. Lura|Nov 20, 2023

The City of Carrington may not continue to pay a Municipal Judge if research on transferring the duties to the District Court pays off. During the Carrington City Council meeting held on Monday, November 13, the board discussed transferring the duties of the Municipal Judge to the District Court. Under that scenario, the city and county would each receive 20 percent of the revenue from fines, and the state would collect the remaining 60 percent. • Grateful at Thanksgiving

    Amy Wobbema|Nov 20, 2023

We’ve been blessed with beautiful fall days lately. I can’t help but smile as I run around doing errands and buzz from one meeting to another. The only thing that could have made this past week better was spending more time outside. With our daylight hours dwindling and the temperatures beginning their precipitous drop, I’m choosing not to dwell on the depressing weather that is destined to come. Instead, I’m focusing on the good things (such as this gorgeous weather) and mindfully practic...

  • Upside Down Under: Greek immigrant recalls terrifying encounter

    Marvin Baker|Nov 20, 2023

When I moved to Langdon in 1995, the company that owned the newspaper put me up in a hotel until I could find a place to live. It didn’t take but a couple of weeks and I found a decent apartment that wasn’t too expensive and it was close to work so I took the third-floor loft. During the two years I lived there I got to know the neighbors quite well. Almost all of them were elderly or recently retired. One neighbor, who was the exception, was a teacher at Langdon High School. One of those nei...

  • Guest: Why do we fall for fall?

    Jase Graves|Nov 20, 2023

Yes, it’s that glorious season that so many pumpkin-spice addicts claim to be their favorite. I must admit that, I, too, succumb each year to the autumnal charms of fall, except for my seemingly never-ending battle with leaves, or, as I like to call them – tree dandruff. So what is it that ironically draws us to a season that marks the end of long, carefree summer days when the sight of a shirtless dad bod outdoors is slightly less disturbing? Let’s get the obvious one out of the way first, the...

Before I die, I want to put some type of requirements in place that they will need to follow in order to receive their portion of my estate. Frustrated Father Dear Frustrated, If you want to influence your heirs even after you’re gone, an incentive trust is definitely an option to consider, but be careful how you construct it because it can cause unintended...

  • CHS netters 4th at Region 3

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 20, 2023

It would have been completely on-brand for the Carrington Cardinals and Oakes Tornadoes to play their typical match for a plaque that, on the surface, might not mean much in the grand scheme. This one didn't go five sets, like their past games are wont to do, but the two programs saved all their drama for the end point of the first two sets. Both of those extra-point affairs went to Oakes, 29-27 and 27-25, and Carrington briefly extended their hopes of a comeback with a 25-18 third set win befor...

  • Rockets advance to State B

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 20, 2023

The second crack at greatness for the New Rockford-Sheyenne volleyball team ended up being much tougher than their successful first attempt just one year ago. In 2022, the Rockets flew under the radar, played the match of their lives, and shocked the Langdon/Edmore/Munich Cardinals in four sets for their first-ever Class B Tournament berth. Four sets came and went in this year's Region 4 championship, with each team registering two victories, and the final set to 15 points meant everyone's blood...

  • Flying under the radar, Cards could surprise

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 20, 2023

The lineup didn't exactly have the greatest depth in terms of match experience last season, but Carrington's boys' wrestling team is one year wiser, and ready to make some noise at key weights. Last year's team placed 10th with 60 points in the State B individual tournament at the Fargodome, while failing to qualify for the dual event. Only eight wrestlers participated at state in 2022-23. The Cards graduated the state champion at 120 pounds, Trace Hoggarth, and the 152-pound fifth place finishe...

  • Girls return to mats for year two

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 20, 2023

The Carrington girls' wrestling program had certainly, to borrow a mixed sporting metaphor, punched above their weight class in their first season as a varsity sport. The Cards ran the gauntlet of predominantly Class A-sized schools to earn a surprising state dual tournament berth at the East Region meet in their home gym, eventually finishing sixth at state, and placed 10th in the open-class individual tournament at the Fargodome last February. Mark Pazdernik begins his second season at the hel...
