  • Field and Garden: Is your sump pump ready for spring?

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster County|Mar 27, 2023

During a miserable stretch of weather several winters ago, I asked my friend Earl Hepworth if he thought spring would ever arrive. Ninety-three-year-old Earl looked at me and said, “Well, it always has.” My friend’s words encourage me that spring will come, even if it’s not as soon as I would like. But as temperatures warm, conditions are likely to remain challenging. Satellite images indicate that the snowpack in Foster County contains the equivalent of three inches of liquid water. As...

  • Reading on the go through city library

Whether we’re stranded inside for another blizzard or out walking the dog on a bright spring day, running or driving a tractor or – hopefully soon – or enjoying some R & R while camping, having a book along can make the whole experience more enjoyable. While it would not be wise to walk the dog or drive a tractor while flipping through the pages of the latest bestseller, you can certainly enjoy the story while walking or driving if you’re “reading” an audiobook. Carrington City Library provides access to 26,000 audiobooks and 43,000...

  • The spring break that wasn't

    Amy Wobbema|Mar 27, 2023

It’s officially spring. Well, at least that’s what the calendar says. We observed the Spring Equinox on Monday at 4:24 p.m., in the midst of piles of snow and a temperature below the freezing mark. At least the sun was out in all its glory, blinding me as I made the short trek from New Rockford to Carrington and back home. Little more than 24 hours later, our area got yet another round of snow, and with it came “challenging travel conditions,” in the words of the meteorologists tasked...

  • Upside Down Under: Rebranding the association. . .

    Marvin Baker|Mar 27, 2023

Anyone who is a gardener in North Dakota should consider attending the North Dakota Farmers Market and Growers Association local foods conference May 4 and 5 at Dakota College in Bottineau. Each year the conference is geared toward better educating gardeners about a myriad of subjects regarding growing, harvesting and having a better display at farmers markets to increase profit and food safety. It’s also about networking, and that is the main reason I go every year, no matter where it is in...

  • Guest: Spring broke. . .

    Jase Graves|Mar 27, 2023

When my three semi-grown daughters were young (and since I work in the lucrative world of public education), we’d spend our spring break holidays riding bikes to the park, making dad-sized pillow forts in the living room, and raiding the gift shop at the zoo. Now that two of the girls are in college and one is in high school, those days (and our gift-shop cash) are long gone. This year, I spent most of my spring break competing with my youngest daughter to see who could sleep in the latest...

    Don Vigesaa, Representative, N.D. House District 29|Mar 27, 2023

The legislative assembly reconvened on March 3, 2023, following the crossover break. Committees began working two days earlier to get several pieces of legislation ready for floor votes on that first official day of the second half. Leadership of both chambers are hoping to have our work completed around the 73rd to 74th legislative day so there is about six weeks left in the session. Some policy committees are nearly through hearing the Senate bills that were passed in that chamber before cross...

  • Savvy Senior: How to appeal Medicare surcharges

    Jim Miller|Mar 27, 2023

Dear Savvy Senior, Is there anything I can do to reduce my high Medicare premium surcharges? Because of my past income, I pay $329.70 per month for my Part B premium and $64.50/month for Part D, but my income has dropped since I retired. Do I have any options? Overcharged Andy Dear Andy, If you’re getting hit with a higher premium for Medicare Part B and Part D and you think it’s unjustified, you can ask Social Security to revisit its decision and perhaps reduce your cost. Here’s what you...

  • Dakota Gardener: Growing apricots in North Dakota

    Tom Kalb, NDSU Extension Horticulturist|Mar 27, 2023

The delicate blossoms of an apricot tree can take your breath away. These white and pink flowers burst open in April while other trees are still sleeping. It’s an amazing sight and a sign that spring is upon us. But winters in North Dakota do not go away quickly or quietly. In many years, apricot blossoms suffer frost injury and the tree fails to produce fruits. How can we enjoy both the splendor of apricot blossoms in spring and their golden fruits in summer? We need to delay the blooming as...

  • 'Miner' problems turn major for M-P-B in State B opener

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 27, 2023

Even if just for the first half, the big stage didn't affect the M-P-B Thunder one single bit. After 16 minutes had elapsed, Coach Bob Young's club was right there with the third-seeded Beulah Miners, enjoying a 21-19 lead. The size and physicality of the Miners wore the Thunder down in the third quarter, and the lid on the rim closed shut as part of a massive run for the Region 7 champions to take a 48-31 win in the quarterfinal round Thursday, March 16, at the Bismarck Event Center. "We came...

  • Ranchers edge Thunder in consolation round by two

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 27, 2023

Josh Moser was feeling the luck of the Irish in the Friday, March 17 consolation semifinals. In contrast to his frustrating opening round game in which he scored just five points, the basket was looking big for the M-P-B senior point guard in the first half. Moser shot 11-for-11 from the floor and finished 13-for-15 while scoring 34 points, but Powers Lake/Burke Central’s Tyson Enget and his teammates were equally up to the task. The Region 8-winning Ranchers matched the Thunder in a very...

  • M-P-B takes 7th at State B

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 27, 2023

Warwick came tantalizingly close to pulling off one of the largest upsets in the history of Class B basketball in the first round in Bismarck, even though the score didn't show it. A 58-43 loss to eventual champion Central Cass featured the heavy underdog Warriors leading going into the fourth quarter, and tied or within one possession well into the final eight minutes. So, in the seventh place game, the Thunder decided not to let Warwick's shooting and transition game take hold, and led pretty...

  • Within our Walls: March 27, 2023

Jodi Hovdenes, President, CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington Medical Center|Mar 27, 2023

Do you have an advance directive for health care? Do you know what an advance directive is? An advance directive is a legal document that provides instructions for medical care and only goes into effect if you are unable to communicate your own wishes.
