  • Report bald eagle nest sightings

    Apr 11, 2022

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is asking for help locating active bald eagle nests. Conservation biologist Sandra Johnson said the department is looking for locations of nests with eagles present, not individual eagle sightings. Eagles lay eggs in early to mid-March, which hatch about a month later. Johnson said it’s easy to distinguish an eagle nest because of its enormous size. Nearly 350 active bald eagle nests can be found in 47 of the 53 counties in the state. Historically, Johnson said nests were found along river corridors, b...

  • Word games are my daily therapy

    Amy Wobbema|Apr 11, 2022

I’m a word nerd. Words are fun and games to me, a lifelong writer. I enjoy searching for the right synonym or phrase to spice up an otherwise ordinary article. At the newspaper office, crafting headlines is another form of “word game” to us. From puns and alliteration to acronyms and homophones, we try them all to get readers’ attention. I will say, headlines still aren’t my strong suit, even after seven years in the newspaper business. In the annual North Dakota newspaper contest, we usually g...

  • Upside Down Under: We could be more diverse? . . .

    Marvin Baker|Apr 11, 2022

Last week’s article showed the diversity of North Dakota and that we fall into the No. 1 category in a number of areas, mostly with grain and row crops. But, there are some areas in which we could do far better with our diversity. Let me give you some examples. • One of them is horseradish. This plant grows very well anywhere in North Dakota, including the wild and thrives in just about any kind of soil type. Yet there is no commercial horseradish production in the state. Two counties; Mad...

  • Perspective: How much democracy do we want?

    Lloyd Omdahl|Apr 11, 2022

Here we are 250 years after the Founding Fathers declared that “we the people” were creating a government with the consent of the governed, we are still trying to define who “we the people” are. At first, we the people consisted of white property and asset owners who had a stake in society. After a bit, new forms of wealth occurred and the definition had to be broadened to permit people with different sources of income to vote. Then in the Andrew Jackson era, the flood gates were opened and eve...

  • Dakota Gardener: Snow mold is affecting lawns this spring

    Esther McGinnis, NDSU Extension Horticulturist|Apr 11, 2022

A week ago, I came home to an unusual scene in my yard. As the sun was setting, I observed a fluffy substance resembling spider webs stretching across portions of the lawn. Were we invaded by a million spiders? Before you get the heebie jeebies, I can reassure you that I had not entered an arachnid horror movie. This white, cottony substance occurred in areas of the lawn that had been covered with snow for the entire winter. The spring melt revealed the gray snow mold that had flourished under...

  • North Dakota Outdoors: Experiences during 1997 Red River flood

    Doug Leier|Apr 11, 2022

In the past couple weeks, many media outlets in North Dakota, especially in the eastern part of the state, published or broadcast stories related to the 25th anniversary of the 1997 Red River flood. With all those historical accounts taking place, it seemed more appropriate to wait a few weeks before relating my own experience. As a North Dakota Game and Fish Department game warden at the time, most of my work revolved around enforcing hunting, fishing, trapping and boating laws. However, game...
