  • A satisfying trip to Carrington

Grant Nelson, Thief River Falls Times and Northern Watch|Apr 17, 2023

I haven't left the familiar confines of Bray township very often this winter. Since it was the time when many people take a vacation to get away from the cold and snow, I thought I would too. Last week, my nephew, Jamie, and I escaped this brutal winter for the warmer climate of Carrington, North Dakota. Carrington doesn't present a vision of sandy beaches and floppy hats to protect your skin from the sun. This is fine because neither one appeals to me. Carrington has seen more snow than we...

  • COVID: my journey to hell and back

    Allen Stock|Apr 17, 2023

A good friend of mine, some 50 years ago, was a basketball coach for a team I covered for my newspaper. Having just won an important district game over a tall and talented opponent, I told him, “Your boys did a great job last Saturday night.” (His tallest of 12 team members was 5’10”; the opponents had a much taller team.) The coach replied, “You gotta’ have a little luck, too.” Likewise, while playing fast-pitch softball, our team played in a 16-team league at Harvey. We...

  • Upside Down Under: North Dakota, more diverse than you think

    Marvin Baker|Apr 17, 2023

It seems that every time we see information about North Dakota agriculture, it’s about the 11 crops that the Ag Department maintains as No. 1 in the nation. In one sense it paints a good picture for us, but in another it’s deceiving because anyone who farms or knows someone who farms, knows North Dakota is far more diverse than that. What about those crops that are No. 3 or No. 6, or even No. 10 in the nation. If you dig deep into the United States Census of Agriculture, you’ll find that...

  • Voices: Some alternate resources for school lunch

    Connie Krapp|Apr 17, 2023

Regarding the controversy over school lunch funding in North Dakota: it makes me physically sick when I hear about children whose family hasn’t paid the lunch bill, and thus are given a cheap meal different than the rest. No child should be humiliated that way! I have long held the belief that North Dakota, which is the most diverse agricultural state in the nation, could be a model for school lunch programs. We could show the rest of the world that the best way to feed our children is to use the very best food – grown locally. Gate to the...

  • Dakota Datebook: State loses its marbles; Look! Up in the sky!

    Apr 17, 2023

State loses its marbles All across North Dakota in 1937, boys and girls age 14 or younger were preparing to go head-to-head in a great marble tournament. Depending on size of the community, schools held tournaments first; then cities held their own tournaments, waiting for the best player to shoot his or her way to the top. Next, county tournaments separated, and then, tri-county tournaments. Finally, the top shooters were sent to Grand Forks on May 15 to compete for district and state...

  • Dakota Gardener: Between the pages

    Joe Zeleznik, NDSU Extension forester|Apr 17, 2023

I didn’t make any New Year’s resolutions this year. So, I haven’t broken any resolutions this year! We are three months into 2023, and I’m bringing up resolutions. Why? In January, a lot of my friends on Facebook were posting about the books they had read in the previous year. The lists were quite impressive. People were reading about leadership, self-improvement and philosophy. And they read quite a few books. I didn’t want to share my list of adventure stories and shoot-‘em-up...

  • Savvy Senior: New RMD rules for 2023

    Jim Miller|Apr 17, 2023

Dear Savvy Senior, What are the new rules on required minimum distributions from IRAs and 401(k)s? I will turn 72 this year and want to be clear on what I’m required to do. Planning Ahead Dear Planning, Thanks to the SECURE Act 2.0 that was passed by Congress last December, there are several new rules that affect required minimum distributions (RMDs) from traditional IRAs, 401(k)s and other tax-deferred retirement accounts. These changes, which build on the original SECURE Act of 2019, are a...

  • Slow snow melt nixes sports week

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 17, 2023

Temperatures outside are climbing into the 40's and 50's and heralding the late arrival of spring in North Dakota, but snow on much of the state's athletic fields are still hanging on for dear life. In Carrington, the complications of that snow, still over a foot-and-a-half high in spots, have led to the postponement of the start of three sports seasons. Though the Cardinal track team has gotten in two indoor meets in Fargo so far, their outdoor season will have to wait for at least one more...
