  • Field and Garden: Another challenging start to the growing season

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster County|Jun 5, 2023

But now, all the remaining fields are wet.” Too much water has been the major challenge facing Foster County farmers as they worked to get their crops into the fields this spring. After record-breaking snowfall this winter, the topsoil was drying out and it seemed that field work was about to begin. But then it rained. The Carrington REC received 2.6 inches betwee...

  • Upside Down Under: It's not as far as you might think. . .

    Marvin Baker|Jun 5, 2023

Often times when I’m involved with my radio hobby of DXing, I’ll run across a radio station I’d never heard of before. When that happens, I look up the distance between my location and the radio tower. In so doing, I’ve come to realize that we are closer to many places than we realize. I’m of course, using my home location, which is in Carpio, a small town in Ward County northwest of Minot. So, if you live in Wahpeton and read this, obviously the respective distances will be far different...

  • Guest: Americans rediscover the summer picnic

    Tom Purcell|Jun 5, 2023

It’s a positive trend that I hope continues: the resurgence of summer picnics. According to Mental Floss, the Covid pandemic caused a picnic boom beginning in 2020 that is showing no signs of letting up. In 2020, with restaurants shuttered and experts telling us the bug didn’t spread so easily in outdoor air, many people, in particular younger people, began picnicking. I was lucky to grow up only a few miles from a county park that offers 3,000 acres of rolling green hills, walking and biking tr...

  • The dive to succeed: Weninger takes 400 title; Cardinal boys finish fourth

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 5, 2023

Logan Weninger’s gritty performances, along with his flair for the dramatic, will be the lasting memory of the 2023 North Dakota State Track Meet for the Carrington boys’ team. Fortunately, he wasn’t alone in his time in the Missouri River sun. Big weekends from Weninger, the pole vaulting corps and 4x400-meter relay all meant a big weekend for the Cardinal boys track team at the state meet Thursday-Saturday, May 25-27. The Cards scored 36 points to lead the “best of the rest” in a team race...

  • CHS girls also finish 4th

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 5, 2023

To achieve a team title in 2023 for the Class B girls' track race at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck, contending schools didn't necessarily have to worry about depth. This year, it was all about the elite individuals (and a good relay or two) carrying their state contingents to the promised land. Carrington's tallies in the distance races, middle-to-long relays, and pole vault enabled them to secure a fourth-place tie with Bowman County by scoring 38 points in the overall...

The shot put provided six points for the Titan girls' team, led by a third-place 37 feet, 4 inch heave by senior Asia Becherl. The G-M boys got four points with a fifth-place effort, those courtesy of sophomore Levi Kautzman's big toss of 51 feet. Boys' relay seniors Eli Larson, Wyatt Spickler and Gavin Nelson, and freshman Wayland Sabinash, took 13th in the 4x400 in 3:40.17 and...
