Two out of the three are almost completed, according to Park Board President Randy Hooey. "All three are expected to be completed this fall, and playable right away in the spring," Hooey said. The new Cal Ripken baseball field is practically completed, with the...

  • Field and Garden: Earthworm mounds, roseslug sawfly, hollyhocks

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster Co.|Aug 1, 2022

Last week I noticed potatoes blooming in some of the community garden plots. The next four to six weeks are critical to prevent the development of potato scab, the most common disease affecting potatoes in gardens. Scab is caused by the bacterium Streptomyces scabies. The bacterium occurs naturally in many soils. Dry soil increases the ability of the microorganism to form colonies on tuber skins. Therefore, keeping the soil moist after blooming is one key to preventing scab development. Some...

  • Gottfred's air unit kept 'em all cool

    Allen Stock|Aug 1, 2022

It was in the late 1940s and into the 1950s that I found myself with one more job. A much appreciated job, at that! Along with lawn mowing, helping my dad and stocking shelves in a grocery store, I also worked at the movie theatre. It was a large, well-kept auditorium on Main Street and owners Gottfred and Wilma Olson made sure the place was always open to the public. The movies ran every night and matinees usually on Saturday and Sunday. The reason was twofold. They drew paying customers and...

  • Upside Down Under: Driver's Ed teaches you this. . .

    Marvin Baker|Aug 1, 2022

I was driving down a city street minding my own business when I came upon a semi-trailer in the right lane of traffic. I didn’t see a blinker so I assumed he was turning right since he was in the right lane and what not. With that in mind, I pulled up next to him in the left lane. All of a sudden this knucklehead decides to turn left before I could dart out of the way. I couldn’t back up because there were vehicles right behind me wanting to turn left. As a result, the right side of my veh...

  • Perspective: Taking advantage of getting old

    Lloyd Omdahl|Aug 1, 2022

Some negative people think that getting old is something to be feared but there are advantages when you pass the 75-year mark. It’s like a period of “no fault” because no matter how much you screw up all you need say is “I’m old!” Which is a good thing because as you get older you are inclined to do more foolish things - like buying a 30-year term insurance policy because it is renewable, sending letters without stamps so when they come back you feel like you’re getting mail, demanding a 2...

  • Dakota Datebook: Margaret Calhoun's loss

    Aug 1, 2022

When Margaret Custer Calhoun buried her husband in his final resting place at Fort Leavenworth on August 3 in 1877, she perhaps felt the magnitude of the 7th Cavalry’s loss at the Battle of the Bighorn more keenly than anyone else. Known as “Maggie” to her family, she was the sister of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer. While visiting her brother and Libbie Custer at their Kansas post, she met and later married James Calhoun, an officer in the 7th Cavalry. Like many officers wives, Maggie followed her husband to each of his duty stations, includ...

  • Savvy Senior: Cheap cell phone plans for penny pinching seniors

    Jim Miller|Aug 1, 2022

Dear Savvy Senior, A few months ago, I read a column you wrote on extremely cheap smartphone plans for budget-conscious seniors. Can you do a similar column for those of us who still use basic flip phones? My old 3G flip phone is about to become obsolete, so I’m looking for the cheapest possible replacement. I only need a simple cell phone (no data) for emergency calls when I’m away from home. Penny Pincher Dear Penny, For many seniors, like yourself, who only want a simple basic cell phone for...

  • Onward to Garrison: Post 25 qualifies for State 'B'

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 1, 2022

Don't let that barely-above .500 record fool you. It took most of the season for the Carrington John Raymond O'Hara Post 25 Redbirds to figure out their roles, and how they would translate to yet another State "B" American Legion Tournament appearance. Once everything started clicking, however, it did so in a big way. For the eighth time in nine seasons, Post 25 is headed back to the "B" with a 10-0 win in the District 4 championship over Kidder County Post 231 Thursday night, July 21, at...

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 1, 2022

The future of baseball in Carrington is in good hands, if the results from the 10-and-under state tournament is any indication. The 10U Redbirds placed as the runners-up for that age group in the State "B" Cal Ripken Baseball Tournament in Casselton July 21-23. Play in the tournament featured a round-robin format in two pools, played Thursday and Friday, and the top two teams from each four-team pool advanced to Saturday's bracket play. Carrington played in the very challenging RoughRider Pool,...
