From the Past: Fire destroys Edmunds Memorial Hall

75 Years Ago, January 23, 1947

The 32nd anniversary of Kiwanis International was observed at the weekly meeting of the Kiwanis club Wednesday when F. Ray Rogers was in charge of

the program.

N. E. Dickerson and Leo Steinman were in Jamestown Monday to attend an organizational meeting of blacksmiths and welders of the state.

Visible at long distances are the new signs at the North American Creamery plant and hatchery which have been recently installed. Above the main plant is a new neon sign which states: "North American Creameries." This sign is visible as far off as Melville, and could be seen even farther if land contours would permit. At the Hatchery building a large "Hatchery" sign has been erected. This one is also neon lighted. There are two smaller identification signs also placed on two corners of the hatchery building.

Firemen, members of the city council and their wives are staging their yearly dinner and social evening at the Chocolate Shop and armory Monday. Following dinner at the Chocolate Shop, the group will repair to the armory for cards and other social activities.

Two Carrington physicians previously licensed in other states received their North Dakota licenses following oral tests at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks recently. Licensed were Dr. Robert F. Gilliland and Dr. William C. Vogelwede.

Seventeen Veterans administration hospitals in the United States are now equipped with permanent typed iron lungs. Previously only four VA hospitals had this equipment. Veteran patients requiring continued artificial respiration may be transferred to the nearest VA hospital having an iron lung or, when travel is not possible, the apparatus may be shipped or flown to the veteran. No permanent-type lung has been planned for the VA hospital at Fargo.

Gil Halvorson, manager of the local Gamble Store, and Henry Kirchoff will leave Sunday for Minneapolis to attend Gamble-Skogmo's merchandise display by manufacturers and suppliers at the Minneapolis auditorium.

Allen A. Nichols reports what he considers an item worthy of "Believe It Or Not" or "Can You Top This?" Sunday evening, January 19th, he and his family visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Guenther, 10 miles south of Sykeston. All evening they listened to a cricket which chirped merrily somewhere near the furnace register. The Guenthers said they'd heard the chirping day and night for 10 days.

50 Years Ago, January 20, 1972

A 42-year-old farmer, Lowell E. Leppke of Carrington, was killed Saturday in an accident while loading silage in a trench slip.

The public will have a opportunity to view the new Carrington Foster County ambulance and to meet members of the squad who will operate the service, at an open house to begin at 2:30, Saturday in the Carrington armory.

Ken Spitzer, Kensal area farmer, was re-elected state NFO president at the group's annual meeting of the state executive board held in Jamestown.

Allen Palmer was re-elected president of the Foster County NFO at the January meeting held at the Chieftain, Jan. 12th.

Navy Seaman Roger A. Richter of Sykeston has graduated from recruit training at the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill.

Phil Sturlaugson of Juanita will appear in the 1971 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

Injuries were apparently not serious to Jerry, five-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Becker, when the boy fell from a tractor Monday. The youngster was riding on a tractor-loader while his father was loading hay near the farmstead five miles north and two miles east of Carrington. Jerry had blackened eyes and a bruise on his neck on arrival at Carrington Hospital, where he was kept for overnight observation.

Cardinal cagers still seek their second win as they were trampled 78-64 Jan. 11th by New Rockford and edged 55-54 Friday by Larimore. The losses

bring their record to 1-8.

Lowell Swart, manager, Albert Deede, Woodworth, and Leslie Hewitt, Sykeston, directors of Dakota Central Rural Telephone Cooperative, returned Friday from Miami, where they attended the annual meeting of National Telephone Cooperative Association.

A young couple from Montana, Lynn Wenstrom and his wife Cathy, have opened up the former Georgie's Café in Kensal.

25 Years Ago, January 20, 1997

AgGrow Oils announced that the company will locate its new $7 million to $11 million crushing plant in Carrington's industrial park. "It's a North Dakota project and Carrington won it on its own merits. Carrington's Development Corporation is second to none," said John Gardner, AgGrow Oils general manager, referring to the incentive packaged offered by CDC.

A winter storm that shut down most of North Dakota Jan. 9-12 has been blamed for the death of a Carrington man. Foster County Sheriff John Statema said the body of Randy Vande Hoven, 41, was discovered late Sunday afternoon near a county road ½ mile northwest of Carrington. Vande Hoven's pickup was on the county road and apparently stalled. Vande Hoven apparently tried to walk to his parents' farm when he was overtaken by the elements.

Edmunds Memorial Hall has been destroyed by fire. The fire was believed to have been started when the furnace exploded. The hall was built about 25 years ago using funds from the veteran's memorial tax levy and was used for elections, dances and other events.

Dorothy Schultz Kulla, a resident at Carrington Health Center Long Term Care, will reach the century mark January 25th and her keys to longevity are simple: clean living, hard work and faith in God.

Births - son Tyler, to Paula and Michael Leichtman, McHenry, on January 8, 1997, at Carrington Health Center.

Carrington racked up nine straight wins over the final nine matches to earn a big dual victory over LaMoure last week in Carrington. "We are improving every week," Carrington wrestling head coach Kelly Hagel said.
