Thunder hit rough patch, drop pair to Loboes, Rebels

Six wins in seven games to start the season for the M-P-B Thunder girls’ basketball team have been a good sign, but the team faced their first extended spell of adversity this season in two Region 3 games on January 6 and 10.

Coach Cory Mack’s girls fell to the LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes, 55-39, and ran into the red-hot E-K-M Rebels last Monday. The Rebs, ranked eighth in the state in the January 10 poll, took down the Thunder by a score of 56-29.

Two of M-P-B’s defeats have come to E-K-M, the other occurring at the Stutsman County Tournament.

In both games, senior Ryleigh Martin was the top scorer for the Thunder. She would pour in 16 points against LaMoure/L-M, and added 13 more in the loss to the Rebels.

Allison Thomas contributed a pair of double-figure scoring outings as well, with 11 and 10 points in defeat.

Four LaMoure/L-M players scored in doubles, led by Mollie Robbins with 16 and Molly Musland adding 15 more.

E-K-M, now 11-0, rode the hot hand of Mataeya Mathern’s 27 points, which included 17 in the first half. Reagan Teske (12 points) and Kiara Jangula (10) also were key factors in the Rebels’ latest triumph.

After games with Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter and Ellendale this past Friday and Saturday, M-P-B (6-3) makes their way down to the Jamestown Civic Center Tuesday night for their annual meetup with District 6 opponent Strasburg-Zeeland (3-5), and travels to winless Barnes County North Thursday.
