75 Years Ago

February 6, 1947

The café located in the Buchanan hotel building, will reopen this week under the name of Hotel Café and will be operated by Jack Pettit and Quentin Jensen.

Ten million dollars may be available for rural electrification in North Dakota during the next fiscal year if Congress appropriates funds being asked for the REA. Senator Milton Young is fighting vigorously any attempt to cut REA appropriations.

Frank C. Johnson, Foster County agent since 1941, has resigned his office and is making preparations to enter the implement business in Carrington. The new county agent will be Geo F. Stewart.

The Carrington high school basketball team showed some of its pre-tournament scoring ability when they rang up 5 points against Benson County Aggies on the home floor Tuesday night to badly outscore the visitors 51-34.

Dr. O. B. Smebak, local chiropractor, has recently added an x-ray machine to his equipment. The new apparatus is used in diagnosis, and is very effective, Dr. Smebak said.

February 3, 1972

Word has been received from University of N.D. that the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Auxiliary scholarship has been awarded to Thomas Aljets of Carrington.

Ronald E. Swart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell D. Swart, received a promotion to Mineman 3rd Class as of Jan. 1. Ron has been stationed in Sasebo, Japan, since August with the U.S. Naval Ordinance Facility.

A tractor trailer loaded with 142 breeder hogs ended up in the ditch Sunday after the driver had averted a collision with a sliding car.

Robert W. Young, executive vice president of Moorhead Area Chamber of Commerce, was elected first vice president of Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Executives at a meeting at Minneapolis. Young is a Carrington native.

The McHenry Blazers are having a good season - the best in Foster County thus far. They smothered Pingree Friday night 95-67 and upped their record to 10-3.

Carrington ended their loss string at six as the Cardinals traveled to Maddock to defeat the Bobcats 77-56 Friday.

LeAnna Aljets, returned home last month from Bamberg, Germany, where she had spent 3½ months with her brother, Major John Aljets and his family.

Jean A. Hafner, Sykeston High School, has been named the Betty Crocker Homemaker for Tomorrow for 1972.

Dennis Unruh, Fargo, was promoted from assistant secretary and mortgage loan officer to assistant vice president mortgage loans, when promotions at Gate City Savings and Loan Association were announced by John S. Whittlesey, president.

Small retail service firms, such as laundry and dry cleaning establishments, restaurants, and repair shops with a gross sales volume of less than $100,000 per year are exempt from the Economic Stabilization Program’s price control. Elimination of price controls on these small businesses should substantially reduce the IRS work load but will have little effect on the overall economy according to the Cost of Living Council.

February 3, 1997

Fire destroyed about 2,000 bushels of sunflowers and a grain bin at the Roger Gussiaas farm northeast of Carrington. Firefighters made four separate trips to extinguish.

Foster County Register of Deeds office should help speed up the process for those searching for real estate records and documents. The county commissioners approved the purchase of software and scanner equipment to transfer real estate records to a CD-ROM format.

Business of the Week - Roy’s Body Shop by Roy Deede. Our main business is overall auto body repair and windshield installation and chip repair. Some of the changes occurring in our business are computerized estimating and color matching. A tip on succeeding is keeping up with the latest product and technology. A “perfect day” at work is when everything goes well.

Carrington Health Center has received over $79,000 in donations designated for a hospice program. CHC has formed a partnership with United Hospice of Grand Forks to bring hospice services to the CHC’s service area.

Carrington Health Center was the recipient of a $20,000 Otto Bremer Foundation grant that will help establish CHC’s Hospice program. The money will be used for training and orientation of staff and volunteers and for a computer and other equipment for the program.

The new Fessenden, Bowdon, Sykeston Sports Co-op will be named ‘Wells County Bears’ The three schools will co-op in football, volleyball and track next season.
