Improvement for HWC in District 7 win

The HWC Hornet girls picked up a big victory over the Warwick Warriors this past week, earning their first district win of the season.

HWC also showed signs of improvement as they played both Kidder County and Carrington tough for the majority of the games before having those teams finish strong for the double-digit victories.

HWC 63, Warwick 18

A great start by the Hornets sealed the game early on, as HWC cruised to a 45-point victory over the Warriors in Warwick on Tuesday, January 25.

HWC scored the first seven points of the first quarter and 11 of the final 12 points en route to an 18-3 advantage after one. Kalyn Keller knocked down a three and scored nine in the opening quarter for the Hornets.

Keller added six points in the second quarter, and the HWC defense held the Warriors to just three more points in the quarter as they moved the halftime lead to 32-6.

Larissa Arnold started the second half with a three-pointer, and then hit on a field goal increasing the lead to 29 at 37-6. Abigail Cavanaugh scored four in a row and six in the quarter for Warwick, but five Hornets players found the scoring column and led, 52-16, after three.

The final quarter was another great quarter for the Hornet girls, as many junior varsity players earned some great playing time. Rachel Neumiller scored six in the fourth for HWC, and the defense allowed only two points as the Hornets claimed the victory 63-18.

Keller led all scorers on the night with 17 points, while Neumiller also had her highest season output, scoring 12. Cavanaugh led the Warriors with six points, all in the third quarter.

With the win, HWC improves to 4-9 overall, while the Warriors drop to 2-11 on the season.

Kidder Co. 49, HWC 36

Saturday, January 29, saw the Hornets host the 11-4 Kidder County Wolves in a non-regional matchup in Harvey. Harvey-Wells County had a valiant comeback that fell short in the fourth, as Kidder County got the win.

Kidder County started strong with a three from Ella Svanes, and then were 6-for-6 from the free-throw line as they jumped out to an 11-0 lead. Another Svanes three pointer increased the lead to 14-2, but a Lexi Fike three for HWC ended the first half with the Hornets trailing, 14-6.

Kidder County scored nine of the first 11 points of the second and led, 23-8. The Hornets finished the half on an 8-0 run courtesy of a five from Keller and a deuce from Fike, making the halftime score 23-15.

Four quick points for HWC early in the second drew the Hornets to within six, and later, a three from Emma Dockter pulled the Hornets within 29-24.

A three from the Wolves’ Grace Nicholson stopped the HWC momentum with Kidder County leading, 33-26, after three. The Wolves’ Taylor Zimmerman and HWC’s Keller exchanged three-pointers to open the fourth as the score moved to 36-29. Arnold would hit a three and Keller added a deuce to help pull HWC to within three midway through the fourth. The Wolves responded with Svanes making her third and fourth three-pointers of the game, while Zimmerman was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the win for Kidder County.

Keller was the only Hornet in double digits with 12, while Kidder County had three players led by Kennedy Harter with 14, Svanes with 12 and Zimmerman with 11.

The win for the Wolves moves their record to 12-4.

Carrington 52, HWC 36

The Carrington Cardinals played host to HWC on Monday, January 31. The Hornets and Cardinals played a close first half, but Carrington pulled away in the second half for the 16- point victory.

Carrington got two three-pointers from Emma Rindy in the first quarter and held off a stingy Hornet team to lead, 10-9, after one. The Cardinals hit the offensive boards in the second quarter, with Edyn Hoornaert scoring four and helping Carrington take a 19-13 lead. Fike hit a three- pointer and then added two free throws to pull HWC to within 21-18 at halftime.

Fike drained a three-pointer for the Hornets to start the second half to tie the game at 21, but the Cardinals, behind six points in a row from Hoornaert and Rindy’s third three of the game, scored nine straight and led, 30-21. HWC would cut the lead to seven with a basket from Neumiller, but Carrington maintained a 36-28 lead after three.

Five Cardinals scored in the final quarter, including Rindy’s fourth three-pointer. Keller and Fike added threes for the Hornets to pull to within 41-34, but Carrington closed on a 11-2 run for the victory.

Leading the way for the victors was Haley Wolsky with 15 points. Rindy added 14 and Hoornaert chipped in 12 for Carrington, which improved to 9-6 on the season.

HWC was led by Fike who scored 15, including three from long range. The loss dropped HWC to 4-11 on the season.
