From the Past: 'Carnival 72' planned by Mrs. Jaycees

February 20, 1947

M/Sgt. Leonard L. Myers of Carrington, an operator of a ground controlled approach crew at Frankfort AAB, Germany, aided in bringing in an army C-54 transport carrying General McNarney, chief of European theatre of operations, and a party of five, through a heavy ground fog interspersed with light snow in the early morning of February 11. Master Sergeant Myers is assigned to the airways and air communication service, a world-wide organization operating radio and navigational equipment to insure safe, all weather flying.

Leonard Borlaug, McHenry, son of Rev. and Mrs. O.A. Borlaug of that city, is touring with the Luther college concert band and the schola cantorium on the 1947 trip that will cover five states in seventeen days. Leonard plays the solo cornet and sings in the schola.

Members of the boards of education of the various school districts were guests at the second meeting of Central North Dakota Schoolmasters organization held at Fessenden. Main business of the meeting was to discuss the salary situation for the coming year. The supply of men teachers would be better for communities that provided housing due to the fact 99% of men teachers are married. Presently there are eight or nine hundred uncertificated teachers, 1,300 who teach on emergency certificates and 2,200 married women teachers. This latter group has been helping out during the war emergency. A bill has been endorsed by the legislature to provide $1,200 per classroom unit for the support of schools.

A former resident of Carrington, E. C. Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Adams, is plant manager of a new processing plant in Fremont, Neb. The plant will produce an all-purpose soap, and plans are being completed for the processing of 2,400 gallons of soap a day.

Playing at the Grand Theatre - “The Big Sleep” - starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

Bridgeman-Russell Creamery Co. now has ready 35 new lockers in its new locker room, and will have a like number ready within two months, it was announced by Art Reichert, manager. The newest type of refrigeration went into the locker plant. The new machine has a blower type coil as compared to the plate coil in the older plant. The walls, floor and ceiling are cork lined.

February 17, 1972

The Binford Eagles and the McHenry Blazers B-squad won first place trophies in a three school tournament for girls’ teams concluded Thursday in Grace City. The hometown Pheasants A and B squads were the victims in both games, losing to Binford 38-27 and to McHenry 20-11.

A contest sponsored by Tri-County Electric Cooperative in which eight young people will win expense paid trips to visit interesting places in North Dakota has been announced by E.M. Arntson, co-op manager.

Snowmobile racing promoter Jim Carr of Carrington said he was disappointed in the size of the crowd at the Central Speedway Sunday, but those who were there saw an afternoon of excellent racing. Mild February temperatures transformed the winter event into a muddy, slushy affair but it did not hinder the racers.

“Carnival 72” is being planned by the Mrs. Jaycees to help raise money for the curtain fund. The fund will be used to buy backdrop curtains for the grade school and velvet stage draperies and backdrop curtains for the high school.

Army Sp-5 Murl E. Gwynn, 25, of Carrington has been assigned to the 38th Artillery Brigade at Osan Air Base, Korea. The specialist, whose wife, Ruth, lives in Oriska, is a 1965 graduate of Carrington High School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan D. Gwynn, Carrington.

A former resident, Clifford Carr, has joined the staff of Coalwell Agency, Inc., at Detroit Lakes and will be employed as a licensed real estate salesman.

Kay Leone Talle, a senior at Glenfield-Sutton High School, is among the 25 highest ranking girls in North Dakota in the 1972 Betty Crocker Search for the American Homemaker of Tomorrow.

Carrington High School recently added new high-tech devices and advanced software to the curriculum. The new equipment allows teachers to present their material in a new and improved way. Andy Braaten and Pat Boehmer, both science teachers are using the Calculator Based Laboratories in their experiments. These calculators are equipped with probes that can measure temperature, light and voltage.

The floor of the Carrington High School gymnasium was filled on Feb. 8th as the annual FFA Alumni Crops Career Development Event was in town. Thirty-nine full teams from across the state competed in the crops portion of the event. Carrington placed first in crop judging and third in livestock judging.

Carol Walen of SuperValu is the Chamber of Commerce employee of the month for January. Walen received $20 in Karrington Kash.

Brenda Ekren has joined the staff of Hair and Nail Designs.

Births - Son to Jamie and Laura Risovi of New Rockford, Feb. 7th.

Son to Todd and Susan Bickett of Carrington on Feb. 9th. Both were born at Carrington Health Center.

Chamber of Commerce ambassadors were on hand as Tami Aljets cut the ribbon in celebration of her new business, Net Steps.

Nearly 100 snowmobiles were entered in the Dakota Country Blasters first ever snowmobile drag races Feb.8. Several hundred race fans were on hand to take in the action east of Carrington.
