Cards make Region 3 field with victory

Almost a decade-and-a-half of basketball has elapsed since Carrington had any Monday night district tournament plans that didn’t involve the 7:30 p.m. prime time slot.

But there was one more streak on the line for the Cardinals in the District 5 Tournament final night Monday, February 14, and that was extending their regional appearance count to 20 consecutive years.

Mission accomplished on that front.

CHS left no doubt of their strength and resolve, hitting on all cylinders in a 68-22 win over Griggs/Midkota to finish the Titans’ season at 7-13.

The Cards’ season continues today (February 21) in the Region 3 Tournament, but they will face a tall task in taking on Linton-HMB (17-3) at 6 p.m. It is a rematch of last year’s championship contest, won by CHS in overtime to advance to that year’s State B in Minot.

A 21-0 first quarter was all that Carrington would need early, and the Cards would start the game on a 27-2 run.

Just like she did in the first game of the tournament against Ellendale, senior guard Emma Rindy set the tone with her three-point accuracy. She added four more threes to go along with her five from the opener.

Haley Wolsky led the Cards with 14 points, and Madison Johnson finished with 10. Off the bench, Olivia Threadgold canned a triplicate of treys for nine points, and Isabel Wendel also had seven points and tied with Edyn Hoornaert with six rebounds.

The Cardinal defenders hounded the Titan guards all game long. Hoornaert made eight steals and Johnson seven, and Sydnie Grager passed for four assists and added two blocked shots.

Josie Johnson had eight points to lead G-M. Asia Becherl scored six and had five rebounds, and Jenna Larson concluded her basketball career with five points, six boards and two assists.

All playing their final games for the Titans were Larson, Johnson, Medora Brandner, Emma Kollman and Amanda Reidman.

In postseason kudos, Carrington had two players make the All-District 5 team, Grager and Rindy, and Larson was the Titans’ lone selection.

Molly Musland of LaMoure/Litchville-Marion was named Senior Athlete of the Year for the district, and E-K-M’s Rory Entzi was Coach of the Year.

Region 3 first round matchups begin with La-Moure-L-M taking on Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter at 3 p.m., Kidder Co. vs. E-K-M at 4:30, Carrington/Linton-HMB at 6 p.m. and Oakes/M-P-B at 7:30.
