Hornets play best ball to qualify for Region 4

The Harvey-Wells County girls’ basketball team won two games at the recently-held District 7 Tournament in Maddock and earned a spot in the upcoming Region 4 Tournament starting February 21 at the Devils Lake Sports Center.

The Hornets opened up with a win over New Rockford-Sheyenne, and then lost to Four Winds-Minnewaukan, the second-ranked Class B team in the state. HWC punched their regional entry with a decisive win over Warwick in the qualifying game on February 14.

Following the game, All District Tournament Team and All-District 7 players were named. HWC’s Kalyn Keller was named to the All-Tournament team, where the senior acculated 63 points over the three- day tournament. Keller and Lexi Fike were also awarded All-District player awards for their performances throughout the District 7 season.

HWC 45, NR-S 36

First Round

The Hornets overcame a sluggish first quarter and then held off a late Rocket rally to win their quarterfinal game on Friday, February 11.

Kaiya O’Connor scored five points and Kennedy Demester knocked down a three at the end of the first quarter, as the Rockets jumped out to an early 10-7 lead after one. O’Connor’s third field goal of the game early in the second helped NR-S increase their lead to 14-9. HWC, behind a deuce from Keller and a three from Fike, regained the lead at 15-14 and led, 17-16, as Rachel Neumiller put in a deflected shot to end the half.

HWC would get the upper hand early in the third. Keller started the quarter with four quick points and HWC used a 10-0 run midway through to build a 29-18 lead. A field goal from Kelsie Belquist to end the third made the score 29-20 with eight minutes to play.

The fourth quarter was highlighted by two of the best players in District 7. Keller hit for five points early on as the Hornets moved the lead to 12 at 34-22. Belquist brought the heat later on in the fourth, helping pull NR-S to within 39-34. The Hornets were tough at the line down the stretch, with Fike and Keller going 4-for-4 as they defeated the Rockets, 45-36.

Keller was the game’s high scorer with 26 on the night, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Keller also grabbed 14 rebounds for the double-double. Belquist scored 10 in the fourth and ended the game with 12 points to lead NR-S.

FW-M 75, HWC 41

Semifinals

FW-M scored 28 points in the opening quarter and never looked back, as they bounced the Hornets into the consolation bracket with a lopsided 75-41 victory in the semifinals on Saturday, February 12.

The Hornets trailed 4-2 early in the game, and in a blink of an eye the Lady Indians had scored nine straight and led, 13-2. A basket from Neumiller stopped the run, but FW-M started another and finished the quarter with a 15-0 burst which included back-to-back three-pointers from Myona Dauphinais and Mahpiya Jackson, giving the Lady Indians a 28-4 lead after one.

The Hornets earned their way to the free-throw line in the second quarter, and made the most of their opportunities, going 13-of-16 and outscoring FW-M 18-14 in the quarter. Keller scored eight in the second, but Dauphinais knocked down two more three-pointers, helping the Lady Indians maintain a big lead at 42-22 at halftime.

FW-M lit up the third quarter from deep, as Dauphinais added two more three-pointers and Jackson also added two threes. Ezura Rainbow scored seven in the third as FW-M scored 22 points. Keller cashed in on a three and scored seven of the Hornets’ 10 third quarter points as FW-M led, 64-32, after three.

Dauphinais added her sixth three of the game early in the fourth before both teams subbed in with their second string. The Lady Indians would go on to the 34-point victory.

Dauphinais led all scorers with 21 points, but Rainbow was close behind with 20. Jackson scored 14 and Alionna Lawrence added 10 for the victors.

HWC was led in scoring by Keller, who notched 17 in the loss.

HWC 69, Warwick 35

Region Qualifier

HWC scored 27 first quarter points en route to a 34-point victory in a regional qualifying game Monday, February 14.

Keller scored 13 points in the opening quarter and the Hornets got three pointers from Keller, Lexi Fike and Larissa Arnold to storm out of the gate with a 27-4 lead after one quarter.

Warwick’s Madison Cavanaugh scored six in the second quarter, but was overshadowed by six Hornets reaching the scoring column. Arnold, Emma Dockter and Kamryn Sanders all knocked down three pointers in the second, as HWC scored 15 points and led, 42-16, at halftime.

Fike connected on her second trey of the game and Neumiller scored six points in the quarter to lead the Hornets to a 19-7 third quarter advantage. A balanced scoring attack for HWC continued as six players again scored in the third for the Hornets as they built their lead to 61-23 after three.

Bethany Brown and Hillary Archambault connected for long range shots in the fourth for the Warriors as they outscored HWC 12-8, but dropped the game, 69-35.

Leading the way for HWC was Keller with 20 while Fike and Neumiller were each in doubles with 10. Warwick was led by Cavanaugh who tallied 12 on the night.

The win moved the Hornets to the Region 4 Tournament with a record of 8-14. The region tournament will start on February 21, and be played in Devils Lake. With the loss, Warwick ends their season at 3-17 overall.
