Thunder qualify for region as #3 seed

The M-P-B Thunder girls left the court at the District 6 Tournament in Ashley in the same position from which they started, as the third seed from the league.

Last Monday, the Thunder put together a good effort for three quarters to outlast South Border, 54-47, in the Region 3 qualifying round.

Both teams had their perimeter games working, as the Thunder and Mustangs connected on seven three-pointers for each side.

In particular, M-P-B’s Allison Thomas was feeling it. After a scoreless semifinal game, the sophomore guard connected on five long shots and led the team with 17 points in the win.

Ryleigh Martin finished with 15 points and Lilly Bohl added 10 in the victory, which matches them up with District 5 runner-up Oakes in the final game of the Region 3 first round tonight (February 21) at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The Mustangs concluded their season at 5-16 overall, with Emily Jochim’s 14 points leading the team. Cheyanne Lindgren and Macy Monson were also double-digit performers with 13 and 11 points.

First Round

On Thursday, February 10, M-P-B busted out of the chutes with a 32-point win over the sixth-seeded Lady Clippers.

Martin had 16 points for the Thunder in the victory, in which the team was decidedly efficient from the foul line at 10-of-12.

Coach Cory Mack’s squad got balance as well, with 11, 10 and nine points coming from Bohl, Thomas and Isabel Schmidt.

Only four players scored for Strasburg-Zeeland (4-14), who was paced by sophomore Addison Wagner’s 12 tallies. Abby Scherr ended up with eight points in the Clippers’ defeat.

Semifinals

The most defensive-minded team in District 6 for the past several seasons, the Wolves, struck again.

Their offense wasn’t clicking, scoring just 36, but it didn’t necessarily have to be.

Even with just two points from junior standout Kennedy Harter, guard Ella Svanes picked up the slack with 15 points, and Avery Rath had 11 more to surpass the M-P-B team total by themselves.

The Wolves iced the game with a 13-2 third quarter, from which seven points alone came from Svanes. Two Martin free-throws represented the entirety of the Thunder’s quarterly output.

Bohl led M-P-B with 13 points in the loss, and Martin was held to six.

Following the tournament, Bohl and Martin were named to the All-District 6 Team. Senior Athlete of the Year went to JayCee Richter of Linton-HMB, and Dan Welder of Kidder Co. was Coach of the Year.
