Brecken Lura works on the shoulders of HWC's Christian Mertz in the 138-pound semifinals at the Region 2 Individual Tournament in Walhalla. Lura, a defending state champion for the Cards, currently sits just three wins shy of the school record for career victories held by three-time CHS state champion and Northern State University wrestler Walker Carr, with 236. Due to the fact that the Cards qualified for the dual state tournament as well, Lura should have several opportunities to break the mark. Along with PCN's Trevor Hinkle, he was also named Region 2 Co-Senior Athlete of the Year.
Carrington got eight of their 12 wrestlers qualified for the following week's State B Individual Tournament in Fargo with a solid showing at the Region 2 meet in Walhalla Saturday, February 12.
With a score of 183 points, the Cards finished in third in the team standings behind host and meet champion Pembina Co. North and Central Cass, who won the Region 2 Dual tourney the weekend prior.
Five champions were crowned for CHS at the northeast grappling outpost near the Canadian border, while two others took third and another fourth to round out the state berths.
Meet titleists included Trace Hoggarth at 113 pounds, Matthew Duchscherer at 126, Brecken Lura at 138, Logan Weninger at 160 and Michael Clifton at 182.
Seniors Lura and Clifton, along with Hoggarth, a junior, will also enter their brackets at the State B as the top overall seeds for their weight classes. Duchscherer, a senior, is the number two seed, and Weninger, a sophomore, comes in at number six.
Coming into the Region 2 competiton, Kael Kovar was the top regional seed at 152 pounds, but took third place. The junior just missed a statewide seed, rated as the ninth wrestler against the #8 seed in first round action last Thursday.
Additionally, senior Jonathan Lura made the state tournament with a third place effort at 170, and freshman Callen Garber was fourth at 195 pounds. They were paired up with the #2 and #7 wrestlers in their weights, respectively.
Unfortunately for the Cards, there were several near-misses in qualification efforts. Dru Carr (106), Nic Garber (120) and Gabe Ricter (220) all finished one place out of automatic berths, while Corbin Clifton, a past qualifier, couldn't overcome an ankle injury from earlier this season and took sixth.
In individual honors, Brecken Lura and PCN's Trevor Hinkle were named as the Region 2 Co-Senior Athletes of the Year.
Meet favorites in Fargo include five-time defending Class B champion Lisbon, and New Salem-Almont and South Border will also be the main competitors. Other teams to watch could include Bishop Ryan, Hettinger-Scranton, PCN and Central Cass.
