Gaining speed: Cards keep foot on gas in win vs. MPCG

The District 5 Tournament in Jamestown was in the sights of the Carrington Cardinals, but they had one last bit of business to tend to before playoff basketball.

The Cards took a 71-54 win over the May-Port-CG Patriots at Finley-Sharon High School February 17, in which they shot an efficient 56.9 percent from the field.

Lucas Hendrickson again blistered the MPCG interior defense by going 9-for-17 and hitting five of his six shots from the line for 23 points, his sixth game of more than 20 points in the last eight contests for Carrington.

He also was a force on the glass with 14 rebounds for the double-double, including seven offensive boards.

CHS (9-10) had three other players in the books with more than 10 points, those being Hudson Topp (14,) Hudson Schmitz (13) and Josh Bickett (11.)

Sophomore guard Grady Shipman kept the offense in optimal flow with eight assists, and Topp also had a positive showing in that regard with four. Shipman and Topp also joined forces for a combined seven steals.

For May-Port-CG, who dipped to the .500 mark at 9-9 with the loss, Marshall Judisch kept the Pats in the game with his shooting from the arc. The sophomore guard had five threes to represent all 15 of his team-leading points.

Landon Koenig, the 6’6” Finley-Sharon product playing in the school’s coop with MPCG, added 12 points, and Xyler Carlson was one point shy of doubles with nine.

Ethan Bergstrom led the Patriots with eight rebounds, followed by Koenig’s six, and Bergstrom also had three assists. Koenig and Judisch each finished with three steals as well.

Because of winter weather delaying the Region 3 Girls’ Basketball Tournament one day to the previous Tuesday (February 22), that had a ripple effect in the scheduling of the District 5 boys’ tourney.

The start of District 5, held at the Jamestown Civic Center along with Region 3, was bumped up to Saturday, February 26, and the planned Saturday and Monday tournament games moved to today (February 28) and Tuesday.

Winners of the two region qualifiers and the District 5 championship game participants will all earn berths to the Region 3 Boys’ Basketball Tournament in Jamestown Monday-Thursday, March 7-10.
