From the Past: Johnson retires as commissioner

75 Years Ago

April 3, 1947

Two hundred thirty people attended the employer-employee dinner, sponsored by the business standards committee of the Kiwanis Club held at the school gym Thursday evening. During the meal, which was served by the Parent Teachers Association, the Carrington school band, directed by R.V. Russ, played a program of musical numbers. Two moving pictures were shown, one on telephone courtesy and the other on “My Job.”

Taking over management and operations of the Buchanan Hotel this week was George E. Engstrom, formerly of Grand Forks, who has leased the hotel from the Buchanan interests. Mr. Engstrom said he plans a through redecorating job in all the rooms of the hotel. Asked why he decided to move to Carrington, Mr. Engstrom stated he likes the town and sees greater possibilities here than in other towns.

Fire destroyed the Jess Kollman home at west Bordulac Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Kollman and family were visiting at the Lee Kollman home south of town. The call was answered by the Carrington Fire Department. William Kleb suffered a lacerated hand from broken window glass when he attempted to save some furniture.

Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Riedesel of Cathay are rejoicing over the birth of twins, a boy and a girl, on March 25th at the Harvey hospital. All concerned are doing well.

A deal was completed Monday evening in which Vernon Knutson leased a building in Grace City from Mr. Bradley. Vernon planned to go to Grace City to do some remodeling. He plans to open a lunchroom there. Mr. Resler will continue to serve lunches in Juanita for some time.

The Eastbrook Merry Makers entertained the community at a party Friday evening. Whist was played and prizes won by Mrs. Mike Fruhwirth, Delores Short and Matt Becker. Potluck lunch was served.

Playing at the Grand Theatre - “Wildfire” starring Bob Steele, also playing “No Leave, No Love” starring Van Johnson.

March 30, 1972

A farm auction near Edmunds was held Tuesday at the Wilbur Bennett farm. The sale was somewhat different. The owners husband and wife were not present. Wilbur Bennett suffered a heart attack after going to Yuma, Ariz. Fifty-four years ago Wilbur’s father, Ira, had an auction at the same farm. The Wilbur Bennettes have no children, and their farm has been sold to Bernie Allen of Pingree.

New office manager of Greater Europe Mission home staff at Wheaton, Ill., is Robert Leppke, a native of Carrington. Leppke lives in West Chicago and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Leppke.

On the Dean’s List at VCSC for the 1971-72 winter quarter from this area are Larry Hoyt, and Lynell Aasand, McHenry, Irene Alley, Paul McDaniel, Glenfield, Arlyce Sharbono and Karen Dreher of Carrington and Richard J. Erickson and Peggy Schroeder, Bordulac.

Monday night, a group gathered at the Glenfield school gym with two engineers from Jamestown and Fabian Noack, attorney from Carrington, to discuss the sewer system for Glenfield.

Mr. and Mrs. Orville Lundby, Janelle and Cindy, were in Devils Lake Sunday where they attended the play, “The American Dame,” put on by Lake Region Jr. College. Neal Lundby was a cast member.

Mrs. Edson Lund entertained at a slumber party Friday for their daughter, Robin, on her 10th birthday. Present were Jodi Rosenau, Sandy Beach, Lori Zink and Carol Paulson.

Rosehill Township held its township election March 21. Edson Lund was re-elected supervisor for three years. William Zink, supervisor for two years to replace Oscar Zink, who resigned; Harry Black, clerk; George Doeling treasurer; Keith Jenson, assessor; Clarence Schroeder, hold-over supervisor.

March 31, 1997

Retired Foster County Commissioner LeRoy Johnson will be honored for his many years of service to the county at an open house on April 1st.

Business of the Week - Rick’s Wholesale Tire, Inc., by Rick and Janel Harrington. We offer wholesale and retail tire sales, oil changes, authorized Comnet cellular dealer, Interstate batteries, accessories for vehicles and on the farm tire repair. Some of the changes occurring in the business right now are speed rated and high performance tires. A tip for succeeding in the tire business is to provide good service with a friendly attitude. A “perfect day” at work is keeping customers happy with speedy service and having a busy, meaningful day.

A rural Carrington man was air ambulanced to a Fargo hospital following a two-vehicle accident on March 25th. The accident occurred three miles north of Carrington on Highway 281. Tim Carr, 42, was injured when his 1983 Ford pickup was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Brian Caulfield 38, New Rockford. Carr’s pickup was struck as Caulfield was attempting to pass. Carr was flown to a Fargo hospital with possible broken ribs and Caulfield was transported to Carrington Health Center and held overnight.

Dakota Central Telecommunications recently added three new staff members to their Carrington office. Deedra Aasand was hired as TV Commercial Representative, Jon Slusser as a dispatcher and Tony Gauderman as a Central Office Technician.

Carrington Health Center Long term Care hosted its first ever style show March 26. Residents and staff donned a variety of fashions - some old, some new.

Area births - daughter to Lori and Tory Hart, Carrington March 23.

A group of youngsters at Sandy’s Sunshine Daycare in Carrington recently raised $423 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by participating in a Hop-A-Thon. Sandy Trader said they did 1,462 hops, earning them an appearance on this fall’s MDA Labor Day Telethon on KXJB-TV.

Cheryl Fettig, was the top winner in the pasta cook-off during the Chamber of Commerce’s Winterfest ‘97. An employee at the Chieftain, Fettig’s winning entry was for her recipe of cajun chicken pasta.

Tracy Lipetzky has been selected as the Chamber of Commerce employee of the month for March.
