Early entrance evaluation available

The Carrington Public School District announces the availability of an evaluation system to determine whether those children whose fifth birthday falls between July 31 and December 31 may enter Kindergarten for this school term on the basis of readiness.

The evaluation is not compulsory for all children. It is established to accommodate the requests of parents having children possessing marked high ability and maturity as compared to their chronological ages. It is designed as a measure to meet individual differences in school readiness providing an educational program and a method of acceleration for those who can profit from it.

Generally, however, most children will have the best chance for successful school experience if they begin their schooling with children of their own age group at the usual time of entrance.

The evaluation includes an assessment of each child’s mental maturity, social and emotional maturity, verbal ability, and physical development. The evaluation has been approved by the Department of Public Instruction.

Interested parents should contact Jenna Helseth, the elementary school principal, for an application form. This will be followed by a parent interview and the assessment of the child. A parent conference will follow the assessment.

Agreement is necessary on the part of all parties involved before the child will be admitted to Kindergarten as an early entrant.
