The long, snowy winter is soon a memory, but area track and field squads aren't quite ready to ply their trades under the sun quite yet.
Carrington, along with HWC and New Rockford-Sheyenne, were three of the teams that took the surface of the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track Complex at NDSU to compete at the State Class B Indoor Meet Saturday, March 26.
Though designated in the name as a "state" meet, the Class B Indoor is not an official championship event, and any times or distances that achieve the state outdoor meet standard do not count towards qualification.
The CHS girls did quite well with a second place finish and 82 team points, to meet winner Central Cass's 117. Carrington's boys' team was seventh with 34 points.
A sizable chunk of points for the girls' team came in the pole vault, where Haley Wolsky led a 1-2-3 finish with a jump of nine feet, one inch. Wolsky's effort would have been a qualifying height in an outdoor meet. Kylie Skadberg was second at 8'3", and Sierra Friedt third at 7'9". Jazmyn Ybarra also added fifth-place points in the event.
Two Cardinal relays also won meet titles. The 4x400 team of Sadie Lura, Isabel Wendel, Madison Johnson and Edyn Hoornaert crossed the line in 4:21.81, and the 4x800 group consisting of Kacie Rexin, Kenadie Pazdernik, Baylee Lura and Johnson's time was 10:43.88.
Pazdernik was an event runner-up in the 3,200, and Baylee Lura took fourth. Third place went to Wolsky in the 60-meter hurdles (10.32), with sisters Isabel and Kennedy Wendel taking back-to-back in sixth and seventh. The younger Wendel, Isabel, was also sixth in the 60 hurdles.
Kennedy Wendel was fourth in triple jump (30' 5 3/4"), as was Hoornaert (1:04.88) in the 400-meter dash.
The boys' team featured a first and second place finish for Jacob Rexin and Jacob Seaburg in the 1,600-meter run. Rexin ran a 5:00.31, while Seaburg's time was 5:14.01.
The 4x400-meter relay was a winner with a 3:43.55 clocking. Team members were the aforementioned Rexin and Seaburg, along with Jaxon Schaefer and Logan Weninger.
Trace Hoggarth took sixth in pole vault and Kael Kovar followed in seventh, and the 4x200 relay of McKade Zink, Ty Johnston, Jake Otto and Weninger got a placement point by finishing eighth.
