From the Past: Teen Canteen opens in Armory

75 Years Ago

April 24, 1947

Lutheran churches that are affiliated with the Missouri Synod are celebrating the synod’s 100th anniversary this month including St. John’s Bordulac and St. Paul’s Kensal. W. E. Leiniger is pastor. St. Paul’s Sykeston, Woodworth and Pettibone is being served by the newly called pastor, Rev. W.A. Brockop.

A Wells road building crew began the construction Monday of a new road leading from the Wells-Foster county line road to the Hawks-nest. Two earth moving machines were brought to the site for the project.

Supt. Henry L. Bernard of Sykeston High School announced the honor students of the Senior class at a special assembly on Monday. Miss Mary Ann Schaack, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schaack was named the valedictorian of the class. She maintained an average of 92% during the four years of high school. Miss Gunda Merck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Merck was named salutatorian.

Cause of the fire which did $1,000 to $2,000 in damage to the Kunkel Motor Co. garage building last Friday morning has not been determined. When the blaze at the back of the garage was discovered, the fire department was immediately called. The damage was confined to the upstairs floor and rafters. No cars were badly damaged, normal activity in the garage resumed.

The Carrington High School sophomore class is sponsoring a program of chorus numbers by 25 women of the Devils Lake Music Club at the high school auditorium April 25th. The sophomores are sponsoring this event to aid its fund raising campaign for photographic equipment.

Carrington’s Teen Canteen was officially opened in the armory Friday, the project was visited by 150 people. Included among the guests included many members of the Jamestown Teen Canteen.

More farmers are signing up for the AAA program in 1947. Assistance in carrying out soil and water conservation practices under the 1947 agriculture program will be available to county farmers and ranchers who file by May 1st. Last year 400 county farmers carried out one or more soil or water practices under the program. Present indications are that this year about 470 farmers will carry out considerably more work then last year. Weed control and summer fallow are the two most popular practices that Foster county farmers have committed to.

50 Years Ago

April 20, 1972

Fire early Saturday destroyed a mobile home at Woodworth owned by Mrs. Elaine Lee. The blaze, believed ignited by the oil burning heater. James Lee, 17, smelled smoke when returning home. He shut off the heater’s fuel supply. There was an explosion and soon after the mobile home went up in flames. The Lee family escaped without injury.

James Bonderud, Carrington, was elected an officer of Auto Body Club at the State School of Science. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Bonderud.

The Olaf and Pat clothing store building has been sold by Gordon Clark to Larry Seibel of Larry’s TV. Seibel had been located near the west side trailer court, he has now relocated to main street.

Students from Carrington junior and senior high schools and local Jaycees will participate in a “Walk for Mankind” April. 29th. They will walk the 32 miles from Jamestown to Valley City along old Highway 10 to raise money for Project Concern. Students and Jaycees from surrounding communities will make the walk.

Wayne Looysen, Carrington, was elected the Fourth District commander of the North Dakota American Legion, he replaced out-going commander, Fred J. Schmidt of Fessenden.

Thomas Dickens’s, “David Copperfield” is one book now available and on display at the Women’s Literary Club tea by librarian Mrs. Robert Hergrave.

Mr. and Mrs. Howard Topp celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary Sunday at the Juanita United Methodist Church.

One hundred seventy-five attended the mother - daughter banquet held at the Federated Church in Carrington. Mrs. Harold Erickson was toastmistress, Mrs. R.A. Andrews, pianist, and Mrs. Chris Miller gave the invocation.

25 Years Ago

April 21, 1997

Sarah Hjelseth was crowned Miss Carrington and Jessica Florhaug was crowned Miss Dakota Country on April 12 at the Miss Carrington/Miss Dakota Country Scholarship Pageant.

Jack Howard resigned his positions on the Carrington City Council and Airport Authority last week following a dispute over the possibility of regulating, by ordinance, the amount of chemicals that are stored at the city airport.

April storm caused the most widespread damage in the history of Otter Tail Power Company. All told, the storm took out more towns then any before in the company’s history. (close to 125) It took out more than 900 poles, a record challenged only to the 2,000 destroyed by an ice storm in 1953.

The Delores Burkart residence at 1121 N. 3rd St. in Carrington was hit extra hard during the early April blizzard. A tree in the yard fell through a shed and hit the house, completely destroying the shed.

Elmer Okert, Carrington, is the new owner of a 1997 Chevrolet pickup, the first vehicle sold at the new Bessette Motors. Don Bessette purchased the former Jim Vetsch Motors on April 1st.

Business of the Week - Community Café Kensal, Vernon Vigessa and Ray Sabinish board members. The Kensal community café is employed, managed and overseen by a board of directors. We’re open 7 days a week with banquets on Sundays. The city received a grant and matched it to open the café and we’ve been in this location for 17 years. One of the changes occurring in the business right now is being sensitive to the needs of the community. A tip for success is to work hard and preserve. A “perfect day” is a banquet dinner and a full house.

Edson Lund, of Carrington, will be honored for his contribution to the state’s livestock industry and his dedication to the North Dakota Winter Show. Edson has been named as the Livestock honoree for the 60th annual North Dakota Winter Show. Lund showed his first 4-H Hereford heifer in the late 1940’s when the show was held in downtown Valley City.

Three area students will advance to the state speech meet this Saturday in Mandan. Jacki Brandt of Midkota, Shandi Eckart of Bowdon and Jennifer Willyard of Carrington. Brandt finished second in the Humorous Interpretation category, Eckert placed first in Serious Interpretation and Willyard earned second in Speech to Entertain.
