From the Past: City water given a clean bill of health

May 8, 1947

Omar Bonderud, freshman from Carrington, was appointed to serve as editor-in-chief for the freshman issue of the “Trumpet,” a six page biweekly student publication of Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa. Bonderud serves on the regular staff as a reporter and carries considerable amount of high school experience in the field of journalism. He was editor of the Carrington High Sentinel in 1945-46.

Delegates to the state Young Citizens League convention returned to their homes last week after spending an interesting and educational time in and near the capitol city of Bismarck in the Foster County delegation were Roger Linderman, Barlow; Lois Nysted, Haven; Mavis Luttschwager, Grace City; Mrs. Eldo Lee, teacher at Barlow and Miss Edna Cusack, county superintendent of schools.

Seven seniors will be graduated from the Heaton High School this year, according to Superintendent A.H. Ekblad, who has announced dates for baccalaureate and graduation. Gerardine Monk has been named valedictorian of the graduating class and Mavis Radke the salutatorian. Gerardine maintained an average of 93 plus and Mavis has an average of 89.

W.H. Roach, city water superintendent, states that reports from the state laboratories give Carrington city water a clean bill of health, as it has done after previous tests which have been taken at regular intervals.

O.C. Brown was elected president of the Federated church men’s club when the group met Tuesday evening of this week. Harold Dufelmeier was named vice president and Vernon Pederson secretary-treasurer.

Mrs. David Montgomery was elected president of the Carrington unit of the American Legion Auxiliary when that group met at the home of Mrs. J.L. Romine last Wednesday evening. Mrs. Montgomery will succeed Mrs. E.A. Roach as the presiding officer.

50 Years Ago

May 4, 1972

Nadine Jo Linderman, a senior at Carrington High School, has been awarded a President’s scholarship for the 1972-73 academic year at Valley City State College.

A horse riding accident took the life May 3 of a Carrington girl, Peggy Wobbema, 18.

Jane Voglewede and Steven Watson have been chosen to serve as Grey Gowns, honorary ushers and marshals, at UND’s 83rd spring commencement May 14 at Grand Forks.

Carrington High School has announced its scholastic leaders for the 1972 graduating class. Jim Busch is valedictorian. He maintained a 3.971 academic average through four years of high school to attain the honor. He is the son of Mrs. Catherine Busch. Jane Brickner is salutatorian. Her average for four years was 3.943. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Brickner.

Honor students at McHenry High School are Barbara Hoyt, valedictorian, daughter of Mr.. and Mrs. DuWayne Hoyt, and Gary Erickson, salutatorian, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marlin Erickson.

Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Lyman observed their 50th wedding anniversary Apr. 30 at Grace City school with many friends and relatives coming to wish them well.

High school senior girls and their mothers were special guests at the regular meeting of Federated Church Guild Tuesday evening. Present were Jane Engberg, Mary Baldwin, Holly Clark, Vickie Fornshell, Shellie Wenass and Becky Larson and mothers.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Balko of Blackduck, Minn., announce the engagement of their daughter, Bonita Rae Balko, to Gary G. Elken, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Elken of Carrington.

May 5, 1997

Carrington Police investigated a break in and theft of money from the Carrington High School Vo-Ag Building. An outside window was forced open and an undisclosed amount of cash was reported missing. The money was collected by students during the year through pizza sales as a fundraiser.

The Elementary School Gym was filled with delectable aromas and delicious dishes as community members got together April 30th for a potluck diner for flood victims in the Red River Valley.

The Wells County Bears Bill Winandy qualified for state in high jump with 6’2”

A pure muskie weighing 33.78 pounds was taken from the McClusky Canal. Harley Murray of McClusky earned a new state record. The fish is the second from that water in many years.
