It happened a day earlier than expected in order to beat the rain, and it was the first outdoor meet for many of the 700-plus track and field athletes and 24 teams that showed up in Fessenden on Thursday, April 28, for the HWC Junior High Invite.
A wet, snowy spring has put a damper on the junior high season. In reality, there are only a couple of weeks left in the season and many performers were seeing their first outdoor meet of the year. To say the Fessenden facility was in top notch shape would be an understatement, but some hard work got the areas ready enough to compete for all those in attendance.
The Hornet boys got first place efforts from Frank Richter in the shot put and Wyatt Korb in the 200 hurdles, while the 4x200 relay team of Jaxon Feist, Kiefer Finley, Manning Buchmiller and Korb also placed first. Richter was second in the discus and Korb was second in the 100 hurdles.
For the HWC girls, Braylee Keller picked up event wins in the 100 and 200 hurdles and finished second in the high jump. With their efforts, the HWC boys finished third overall, while the HWC girls finished seventh.
