Raising the bar

In the long-awaited return to action for area track teams, the Carrington pole vaulting crew had one of their most lucrative meets that they've ever experienced on the state qualification front.

The optimistically-named "Snow Snow Go Away Invite" from Miller Field at Bismarck's Shiloh Christian School Thursday, April 28, yielded three separate Cardinal competitors making the State B roster at the Bismarck Community Bowl later this month.

Two of those qualifiers came on the girls' side, as freshman Mercedes Lura and sophomore Kylie Skadberg each cleared the required nine-foot height. The boys got a qualification from Kael Kovar's 12'3" clearance, a high school career-best for the junior.

Other winners at Shiloh on the boys' team were Jacob Rexin (1,600) and Ryder Bickett (javelin), and the girls got a victory from Madison Johnson in the 1,600 which improved her State B seeding in that event. The 4x400 and 4x800 relays also won in Shiloh.

The Cardinal girls placed second as a team behind Rugby with 134 points, and the boys were third with 74, trailing meet winner HWC and the runner-up Panthers.

Four days later, CHS traveled southeast to the Starion Track and Field Complex in Oakes for a day meet, and got several more in the state docket.

The girls' 4x800 team of Edyn Hoornaert, Kenadie Pazdernik, Kacie Rexin and Johnson blazed to a time of 10:08.16, over 12 seconds faster than the standard. Johnson would also add a third event to her state meet slots, the 800, in a clocking of 2:25.81.

One new qualifier came from the boys in Oakes, as Bickett achieved a career-high toss of 163'2" in the javelin.

Additional event triumphs came from Jacob Rexin in the 1,600 and Kovar in pole vault for the boys' side, and Hoornaert was a winner in the girls' 400.

The CHS girls won the Oakes meet with 133 points, edging out South Dakota school Mobridge-Pollock (S.D.) by eight points. The teams swapped places in the boys' race, with the Tigers taking first in a 150-point runaway and Carrington second at 74.

The M-P-B Thunder were also among the teams competing in Oakes.

Placers for the boys were Mark Thomas, fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, and Sawyer Wanzek was eighth in the 1,600.

Ryleigh Martin had two scoring performances for the girls in the 100-meter hurdles (fourth) and 300-meter hurdles (eighth), and Lilly Bohl took eighth place in the 1,600 as well. In shot put, Abigail Reich took seventh.

The 4x100 relay of Sophia Bohl, Samantha Reister, Emily Carlson and Martin finished sixth.
