Two scheduled home games for the Carrington baseball team were moved to Wishek Thursday, April 28.
In their first competitive action in a span of almost two-and-a-half weeks, the Cards took on South Border in their second meeting of the young season, and played the Kidder County Wolves in game two.
That time away from the diamond ended up hurting Carrington's level of crispness and execution, as they dropped a 6-4 decision to the Mustangs and fell, 5-3, to the Wolves.
After spotting South Border a run in the first inning, CHS put up a three-spot in the bottom of the frame. Grady Shipman scored on an error and Noah Paulson on a successful double steal. Lucas Hendrickson drew a walk, and would later come across on Owen Hagel's RBI single.
In the top of the fifth, the Mustangs busted through for a three-run rally that would ultimately be fatal to the Cards. Run-scoring hits by Seth Wolf and Colin Goettle, along with an error off the bat of Berkley Frantz to score Wolf, were the big plays.
South Border added a run in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. In the Cards' last at-bat, Hendrickson hit an RBI groundout to score Paulson, but that was all they could manage.
Shipman took the loss on the mound, but racked up 11 strikeouts in five innings. Just two of his five runs allowed were earned, and he walked three in the outing.
Rykan Salwei got the win for South Border with six solid innings, striking out eight. Paulson had two hits, and Jack Erickson had the other single for CHS.
The Cards struck first in game two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Shipman drove home Paulson with a single, and Hendrickson's sacrifice fly would allow Shipman to score and make it 2-0.
Kidder County pecked away at the lead with a single run in the third, tied the score in the fifth, and took the lead in the sixth.
CHS got the equalizer in the bottom of the sixth when Hudson Schmitz scored on a wild pitch on a dropped third strike with Erickson batting.
The Wolves struck for the winning runs in the top of the seventh on Grant Pfaff's RBI double, and later scored himself on a wild pitch.
Following his first inning troubles, Kidder hurler Blake Braun settled down for a complete-game six-hitter, with seven strikeouts.
Schmitz, who came on in relief in the final inning, took the loss.
CHS returned to action last Tuesday in Valley City, and took a 5-1 non-region loss to May-Port-CG.
The Cards (2-3 overall, 2-2 Region 3) took on the Wolves in Steele today (May 9), and were scheduled to host Midkota Thursday. The scheduled May 10 home date with SNR was moved to Sat., May 14, at noon.
