Cards one-hit by Loboes, edge Midkota in league

Carrington split each game of a three-team doubleheader in Tolna Friday, May 6, dropping an 8-0, one-hit shutout loss to defending Region 3 and state champion LaMoure/Litchville-Marion, but getting one win for their efforts against Midkota/Dakota Prairie/Lakota/Griggs Co. Central, 6-4.

Lucas Hendrickson's single was all the Cards would be able to manage against Loboes' righthander Landon Piehl. The tall senior lit up the CHS bats for seven strikeouts, and allowed just four other baserunners on a walk and three hits-by-pitch.

L-L-M (6-0 Region 3, 7-1 overall) experienced their first regional contest in which they scored less than 10 runs. However, they still had four players with multiple hits, led by Cyle Warcken's 2-for-2 with a double and three runs batted in.

Anthony Hanson and Connor Johnson each had two hits and two runs scored, and Garrett Hebl also had a pair of singles.

Taking the loss for Carrington was Hudson Schmitz, who ran into trouble in the fifth inning after keeping the score at 1-0 for the Loboes until that point. Kael Kovar also threw an inning for the Cards in the loss.

Now in need of a regional win to stay near the middle of the region ranks, CHS went to Hendrickson to face the Mustangs. The lefty was nicked for two runs in the bottom of the first after Garrett Haakenson and Zach Gibson singled and scored on a passed ball and bases-loaded walk.

Carrington's big inning came in the top of the third, as Noah Paulson cracked an RBI double and Hudson Schmitz tied the score with a single. Both would eventually come plateward on a sacrifice fly and balk, respectively, to give the Cards a 4-2 lead.

Midkota drew to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth on a Haakenson single, but CHS got two back in the fifth when a walk to Grady Shipman and Schmitz being hit by pitch would both circle the bases thanks to an RBI groundout from Hendrickson and a wild pitch.

The Mustangs got within 6-4 on Kaleb Short's run-scoring grounder, but neither team scored in the final two frames.

Shipman, who came in relief in the fifth, pitched a flawless three-inning stint with four strikeouts for the save.

The losing pitcher for the Mustangs was Preston Lee, who pitched three innings and gave up four runs. Ross Thompson finished the game by throwing the final four frames.

With the loss, Midkota fell to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in Region 3.

Carrington (3-4 overall, 3-3 region) will host L-L-M today (May 16) in the final regular season game.

City Park will play host to the Region 3 Tournament May 23-25, with final seeding yet to be determined.
