From the Past: Fire destroyed Hart farm home

75 Years Ago

May 29, 1947

Fire destroyed the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hart, Bordulac, on the night of May 14, the blaze originating in a chimney. Only some furniture was saved. The house was a 7 room structure.

Last Sunday people of the Bordulac community showered the Hart family with articles of merchandise and money. Hart has purchased the house on the T.H. Cousins farm and will move it to his farm next fall.

Observing a birthday anniversary the Girl Scouts of Carrington held a party at the armory Saturday afternoon, with mothers of members as guests. A program was presented and a luncheon was served.

When E.A. Roach brought his car to a local service station on Monday after a weekend trip to Detroit Lakes, a station attendant opened the hood over the engine and out jumped a cat, very stiff and very scared.

Avenging a previous defeat, the Carrington baseball team (senior) took the Bremen team by a 5 to 0 count in a seven-inning game on the Carrington diamond last Wednesday evening. Red Martin on the mound for Carrington gave up only three hits and had a smooth-working team supporting him. Bremen used three pitchers.

Students in the Carrington High School who have completed all requirements for entrance into the freshman class received certificates on Wednesday afternoon, it was announced by Supt. F. Ray Rogers. Of this group, Margaret Hunstad, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Hunstad of Carrington leads the eighth grade in scholarship with 48.5 honors for her two years in the junior high school department. She also leads the class, 30 in number, for scholarship during the year with 24,875 honors.

James Felchle succeeds Francis Perkins as commander of the Carrington post of the American Legion, his election having taken place at the Legion meeting last Wednesday night.

50 Years Ago

May 25, 1972

The water was chilly but not cold enough to deter some of the Boy Scouts who pitched their tents in the recreation area of Arrowwood Refuge last weekend. It was camporee time and more than 200 Scouts from 17 units camped along the James River. The Scouts enjoyed sparkling spring weather. The squall that brought hard rain and hail to Carrington Friday evening just dampened the campsight east of Edmunds.

79 high school careers culminate tonight (Thursday) as Carrington High School seniors will receive their diplomas at commencement ceremonies at the local gym. The program will begin at 8:00 p.m.

Summer school classes are scheduled to begin on June 5 in the Carrington schools. Included as course offerings are reading, math and art. Supt. A.K. Johnson said.

District 13 delegates to the Democrat-NPL convention in New Rockford endorsed Dale Linderman of Carrington and Bryon Langley of Warwick as candidates for the N.D. House of Representatives.

Seven from the area will receive diplomas from Valley City State College May 26 at two exercises, scheduled at 9 and 11 a.m. Area graduates are: Irene C. Alley, Glenfield; Larry S. Larson, Juanita; Sandra D. Kutz and Margaret Ann Laber, Sykeston ; Larry E. Cody, Karen Machart and Kathleen Machart of Carrington.

After teaching 32 years in rural schools of Foster and Eddy counties and two years as fifth and sixth grade teacher in the Grace City school, Mrs. Agnes H. Olson has retired.

Gary Newharth of Hurdsfield and Larry Rexine of Bowdon were awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education at the close of spring quarter at Minot State College.

May 26, 1997

Lee Albright has been named assistant manager at Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge. He began his duties there May 12. Albright’s duties include management of waterfowl production areas, the Wetland Easement Program and he will also serve as farm bill liaison for Foster and Eddy counties.

Forty blocks of city water lines need to be repaired. A Bemidji, Minn., firm found several troubled areas before they were ultimately stopped by an excess of dirt in the line. City council opened bids for 24 new manholes, 30 blocks of water line and 10 blocks of storm/sanitary sewer lines.

A house fire caused an estimated $3,000 to $4.000 damage to the Dan and Lisa Beckley home in Bordulac the evening of May 16. The majority of the damage was contained to the second story of the home.

Business of the Week - Ben’s Barber Shop by Ben Edinger. My business only has one chair and I have it in my home. The majority of customers are seniors which I enjoy very much. I began barbering in 1950. A tip for success in my business is always being available, doing your very best and making the customer feel appreciated. A “perfect day” at work is to see my customers come in happy and go out happy. The changes in my business right now are customers are going back to shorter cuts.

Mark A. Weninger has been chosen as a local winner representing Carrington High School in the Servistar Coast to Coast All-American Vocational Students Award.

Kay and George Aljets and Tom and Donna Seaburg announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of Amy Aljets and Mike Seaburg. The wedding will be held July 26 at the brides home.

Cassie Buckle and Cory Smith were married April 15, 1997 at the Chapel -of -Love, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Children in Ruth Braaten’s kindergarten class took advantage of a sunny day last week to celebrate the end of the school year and birthdays with a picnic.

Moorhead State University wrestling coach John Sterner has announced the signing of Carrington High School wrestler Kevin Wolsky.

Two former Carrington High School wrestlers received NAIA All American Honors at the Valley City State University Viking Booster Club Viking Awards social held May 5. Kirk Zink and Justin Jensen were named to the honor while Zink also was named the Outstanding Senior Athlete in wrestling.
