From coursework to. . . course work

It didn't take Carrington native Jayden Shipman long to secure a job once he got a college diploma in hand.

In his case, it was waiting for him.

Upon receiving his degree in accounting and finance from Valley City State University, he stepped into his new role on a full-time basis, as the new General Manager at CrossRoads Golf Club.

Shipman was asked by the Independent if this was what he was anticipating coming out of VCSU.

"Not really," he chuckled. "I've been working here for the past two to three summers, and the position came up at the end of last fall."

He was formally hired in January, taking over in the position from Wendy Schmid.

Jayden grew up around the game, as his dad, Wayne, is a longtime member of both CrossRoads (since it opened in 2003) and the old Carrington Golf Course on the south side of town when it existed.

"I didn't really get to play golf that much in school," he explained. "I went out my senior year, but I was always concentrating on baseball [in the spring]. But I like being outside, and love the game."

An All-State player in high school, his passion for baseball followed him to VCSU, and he just concluded a four-year career with the Vikings by being named the program's recipient of the "Champion of Character" Award.

Being tabbed as manager in the offseason helped Shipman prepare mentally for his job responsibilties.

"With my degree, it kind of helped with the inventory and financial aspect of CrossRoads," he says.

Some of Shipman's main tasks as general manager include scheduling events, ordering golf equipment, supplies and apparel, mowing the course, applying fertilizer and chemicals to the grass and running the front counter for meals and drinks.

In addition, he effectively functions as the "public face" of the course.

Shipman hopes to keep the club's momentum and reputation as one of the state's top venues going strong.

"Some of the main goals would be to increase our revenue through driving increased membership enrollment, and to just keep growing the game of golf in Carrington and the surrounding areas," he said.

CrossRoads Golf Club has been rated as a four-star course by Golf Digest for nine consecutive years, and has also been cited by the magazine as among the top 3 percent of courses in the country.
