Even while clipping this hurdle, Haley Wolsky would take the girls' 100-meter hurdle championship for the Cards. M-P-B's Ryleigh Martin (far right) was second, and Isabel Wendel (behind Wolsky) was third. The Thunder's Sophia Bohl, behind Martin, came in sixth in the race.
Logan Weninger took first in the 400-meter dash, was second in the 200, and ran anchor on the state-qualifying 4x800-meter relay.
Jazmyn Ybarra qualified in pole vault, placing third.
The season started with snow, the melt and a few more rainstorms, but the Carrington track teams are hitting their stride at the right time.
At the South Central Region Meet in Hazen May 21, the Cardinal girls took home another regional championship with 163 points, and the boys finished fourth, scoring 83.
The meet represented the last chance for athletes to earn their way to the state track meet, held this past weekend at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck May 26-28.
Region champions included Madison Johnson (800, 1,600), Haley Wolsky (100 hurdles, pole vault with a school-record 9'7"), Mercedes Lura (300 hurdles) and the 4x800-meter relay of Johnson, Baylee Lura, Kacie Rexin and Kenadie Pazdernik on the girls' side, while winners for the boys were Logan Weninger (400), Jacob Rexin (800), Ryder Bickett (javelin), Kael Kovar (pole vault) and the 4x800 with Kovar, Rexin, Jacob Seaburg and Weninger.
Another notable accomplishment on the girls' side came in the pole vault, where the Cards qualified their fourth and fifth different state meet entrants. Aside from Wolsky's record-setting win, Pazdernik placed second and Jazmyn Ybarra third to join Wolsky, Lura and Kylie Skadberg as event entrants in Bismarck.
A total of 18 boys and girls for CHS laced up the spikes for the State Track Meet over three days at the bowl.
