Card girls take sixth; boys finish 13th

Thanks to their strengths in pole vault, middle to long distance and long relays, the Carrington girls' track team had themselves a very successful weekend.

The Cardinals scored 37 points to take home joint sixth place with Lisbon at the State Track and Field Meet at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck, held Thursday-Saturday, May 26-28.

For the first time, the meet was extended to three days from the traditional two days just before the Memorial Day weekend, and the expanded schedule allowed teams to spread out their distance race entrants and allow several field events to get early starts.

The Cards got their first two team points of the weekend Thursday night in the 3,200-meter finals, where freshman Kenadie Pazdernik placed seventh with a time of 12:13.10.

On Friday, another freshman, Mercedes Lura, put her name in the CHS history books with a second-place jump of 10 feet even in the girls' pole vault, besting teammate Haley Wolsky's 9'7" set at the South Central Region in Hazen. Wolsky did quite well herself, jumping 9'6" to bring home a fifth place showing.

Carrington's other runner-up finish came in the 4x800-meter relay, as Emerson Hoornaert, Pazdernik, Baylee Lura and McKenzie Johnson crossed the line in 10:12.39 to finish behind champion Rugby by just under four seconds.

Another relay, the 4x400, made the podium with a fifth-place run of 4:11.01. Team members were Johnson, Mercedes Lura, Isabel Wendel and Hoornaert.

Johnson had two place-winning runs in the middle distance, finishing fourth in the 1,600 (5:23.88) and fifth in the 800 (2:23.01).

In the 100-meter hurdles, Wolsky took home seventh place with a 16.37 time.

Wendel just missed earning a team point in the high jump, jumping 4'9" to finish ninth.

Central Cass won their first-ever girls' championship with 82 points, followed by regional rival Kindred with 47. Rugby was third with 41 points, NR-S fourth with 40 and Beulah fifth with 38.

The Cardinal boys finished with 11 team points to finish 13th overall.

Leading the way for the CHS boys' contingent was freshman javelin thrower Ryder Bickett, who set a career-best with a third-place toss of 164 feet, 11 inches.

Sophomore Logan Weninger had two additional placing performances for Carrington, running 50.98 for sixth place in the 400-meter dash, and adding an eighth place plaque for the 200 in 23.45.

Junior pole vaulter Kael Kovar placed eighth with a vault of 11'6".

In the boys' team race, everybody was playing catch-up with the Kindred Vikings. Kindred rolled to 124.5 points, easily outdistancing a very strong second-place effort by Bowman County with 95. It was the Cass County school's third state title in school history, having also won championships in 2014 and 2019.

HWC (see related article) placed third with 66 points, and Central Cass (59) and Hazen (56) rounded out the top five on the boys' side.
