From the Past: RAGS is now open in Carrington

75 Years Ago

June 19, 1947

Life memberships in the Order of Eastern Star was granted to three members, Mrs. Mae Page, Mrs. F.N. Chaffee and Mrs. C.H. Reimers at the Eastern Star meeting held last Wednesday night.

Quentin Jensen, manager of the Hotel Café, Carrington, is a patient in a Jamestown hospital where he is being treated for injuries sustained in an accident on Highway 281 at Buchanan Monday night, in which his companion, Joseph W. Scott, 37, Fargo, was killed.

New business establishment in Carrington is the office and display floor of the Carrington Bottlegas Co., now located in the Kunkel building located 1 block south of the Buchanan hotel, formerly occupied by the Farmers Union Oil Co.

In games played the past week, Carrington’s senior baseball team defeated Edmunds on the one diamond last Wednesday evening by a score of 13 to 9, and lost at McClusky Sunday in a 7 to 4 game.

Purchase of the Monson warehouse on the N.P. right-of-way by Otto Klindworth formerly of Fessenden, was announced after the deal was closed Monday of this week, the new owner planning to convert the building into a seed house for his certified seed business.

A long career of service in the Carrington post office came to an end on Wednesday, June 18, when Mollie Stambaugh Clapp’s resignation as clerk became effective. She has 28 ½ years to her credit in the post office, having started working on December 18, 1918.

Foster County club boys took part in 4-H livestock judging events held in connection with two livestock sales this past week, at the Sky Ranch., Courtenay, last Thursday and on Monday of this week at the William Company sale at Courtenay.

Attending the golf tournament in Devils Lake last Sunday were H.D. and Bob Stitzer, John Bauley, Gordon Stene, C.H. Hunstad, Wm. Kunkel, Frank Johnson, Dr. R.F. Gilliland and A.G. Schultz.

June 15, 1972

Rev. and Ms. Robert F. Collett have moved from Grace City, Rev. Collett having been appointed pastor of the Milnor-Lisbon Methodist Church.

Ronald Semmens, associate professor of elementary education, is one of five instructors at Mayville Sate College, chosen as an Outstanding Educator of America for 1972.

Bartlett J. Ericksen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bjerge Eriksen of Kensal, received his M.D. degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School during commencement exercises June 9.

Three New Rockford young men were involved in a car-motorcycle collision near Lake Juanita Sunday afternoon.

The driver of the cycle, Bruce Byrum and his passenger, Donald Schafer were taken to the New Rockford hospital, where they were treated for bruises and released.

The collision occurred as the car driven by Ronald Lies attempted a left turn off the gravel road. The cycle struck the left front side of the car.

A massive derailment on the Burlington Northern line east of Glenfield Monday afternoon resulted in a concentrated and sustained effort on the part of railroad men to clear and restore the mangled track.

61 cars hurtled from the track at approximately 3:50 p.m. Monday. The derailment is the worst in memory of area railroad workers.

The Foster County 4-H livestock judging team placed first at the N.D. Junior Hereford Association Field Day held at West Fargo.

Members of the team are Barb and Betty Schroeder, Bordulac, and Neil Lund, Carrington. Neil was third high individual and Barb placed second overall. Betty placed third in the showmanship contest. Each received a trophy and the team was awarded a trophy.

June 16, 1997

The Grand Opening for the remodeled HiWay Standard will be this weekend. Along with hot dogs, chips and pop, there will be door prizes. Their remodeling project consisted of removing the service bays and adding a convenience store, and adding a state-of-the-art touchless car wash.

The old Standard Oil Company building laid in rubble last week at the corner of 11th Ave. and First St. North. It was razed to make way for the new fire department building.

Security Insurance Agency has hired Jim Schmitz to the staff of insurance Agents in the New Rockford and Carrington locations. Jim has previous experience as a crop adjuster and had also taught at Carrington High School for three and a half years before joining the team.

John Zietz, general manager of Cargill, Inc., of Carrington, presented Jana Linderman with a $1,000 Cargill Community Scholarship. Linderman was one of five graduating seniors in the state and one of 150 in the nation to receive the scholarship.

Wendy Schroeder of Carrington, is among 81 recipients of $600 agricultural studies scholarships from the Cenex Foundation. Schroeder is an Agribusiness Sales and Service major at Bismarck State College.

Joel Utke, Glenfield and Heather Taverna, New Rockford, have been named to the President’s Honor Roll for the 1997 semester at Bismarck State College.

Kids were jumping all over when the Carrington Gymnastics Club sponsored a “Free Day in the Park” last week. Youngster had a chance to see and participate in several of the areas of the gym program.

Gaylene Goter, Woodworth, was the high individual scorer at an FFA quiz contest at NDSU in Fargo last week.

Jack Howard was recently recognized for 28 years of service on the Carrington Volunteer Fire Department and had served as assistant chief for six years.
