Cathay to celebrate 130th anniversary

Cathay is celebrating its 130th anniversary with a celebration and All-School Reunion on August 6-7, 2022.

Cathay was established in 1892 by a railroad running along the Rocky Run. It was named after a Chinese cook’s home country. Cathay is a historical name for China.

Cathay celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in 1967 and its Centennial in 1992. The once booming town of 200 is now diminished to just 20.

On Saturday, August 6, activities are going to begin in Cathay by supporting the volunteer fire department that still takes care of the area. The fire department will serve a freewill breakfast at the fire hall in Cathay from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This will provide the opportunity to meet some of the present residents who call Cathay home as well as reminiscing with old friends.

There isn’t a facility big enough to host the celebration in Cathay, therefore activities will be moving to the Chieftain in Carrington. Registration will begin in the Buffalo Room at the Chieftain at 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, August 6.

Before the banquet, there will be a social time to mingle with classmates, teachers, and friends. At 6:00 p.m. there will be a banquet with a planned program. A breakfast will be provided Sunday morning for those who wish to have more time to socialize.

Anyone who has a connection to Cathay is welcome to attend.

Pre-registration is required by July 1 and can be made by contacting Susan Wold at [email protected].
