Babe Ruth wins one, loses two

Carrington's Babe Ruth baseball club took their first win of the season on Thursday, June 9, with a 12-8 road win in Wishek over the Ashley/Linton/Wishek Rattlers in District 6 play.

Six runs in the top of the first inning and four more in the third gave the 13-to-15 year old Redbirds a big lead they would not relinquish, though A-L-W would make a game of it with six tallies in the middle innings to get to 11-8.

Carrington tacked on an insurance run in the seventh for the final tally.

Josh Bickett was the winning pitcher for the Redbirds, and also was 2-for-5 with two runs scored on the bases.

Corbin Clifton had a double and two runs, and Max Whitman scored twice with a hit. Additionally scoring two runs was Jacob Boeshans, and Ethan Roller had the other hit for the 'Birds.

A shoddy fielding start against Steele marred the Redbirds' chances for win number two, as the Kidder County side took advantage of extra outs for four runs out of the gates.

Six more tallies really put the 'Birds behind the eight-ball, but they did admirably in not giving up though eventually going down to defeat, 13-10.

Walks and hit batters would end up being fatal, and that was putting it lightly. Steele reached base in that manner 17 times.

Tate Wolsky, Roller and Easton Mittleider all drew mound duties in the loss.

Ryder Bickett showed off his power swing starting with the Steele game. He went 3-for-4 with a home run, and his cousin, Josh, was also 3-for-5. Clifton added two hits, and the other three hits came from Roller, Wolsky and Whitman (double).

Last Tuesday, the Redbirds ventured out of district competition, and ran into a solid Lisbon team. The boys from the Sheyenne River valley scored eight times in the final two innings to win by 10-run rule, 14-4.

Once again, it was Ryder Bickett providing an offensive highlight. The 15-year-old center fielder put a charge into a pitch to clear the 398-foot distance marker in center for his second homer of the season.

Also in the loss, Taylen Mehring had two hits and a run, and doubles came off the bats of Josh Bickett and Roller.

Mittleider took the loss, and was relieved by Whitman in the fifth inning.

For Lisbon, Jayden Howard had a pair of extra-base hits (triple, double), and Colton Johnson got the win on the hill.

Next up for the Redbirds (1-2 District 6, 1-3 overall) will be two league games today (June 20) against Ellendale starting at 4 p.m. There will be no JV game.

Tuesday, the team travels to New Rockford for non-league play at 1 p.m., and return to District 6 with a game at Steele on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m.
