Pitcrew wrestlers attend Steiner Bros. camp

The Carrington Pitcrew youth wrestling program was visited by two of the sport's premier coaches for a three-day Folk Style Extreme summer camp, held Monday through Wednesday, June 13-15, at the Pitcrew Wrestling Center.

Troy and Terry Steiner, who are Bismarck Century High School alumni, national champion wrestlers for the Iowa Hawkeyes and most recently head coaches at Fresno State University (Troy) and the U.S. Women's National Wrestling Team (Terry), held an intensive three-day camp where youth were able to develop their skills in all wrestling mat situations.

Wrestling for the Big 10's Hawkeyes, under legendary Head Coach Dan Gable, the Steiners were members of three NCAA championship teams from 1991 to 1993. Troy was an individual national champion in 1992, winning All-American honors all four years, and Terry in 1993 (three-time All-American). To date, they are the only North Dakota natives to win a Division I championship in the sport.

Troy served as head coach at Fresno State from 2016 until the program was dropped this past year, and served in an assistant capacity for the Oregon State, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota programs. Terry has been the Women's National Team coach since 2002, and also assisted at Wisconsin and Oregon State.

Nearly 50 boys and girls attended the camp, which was also assisted by local wrestling coaches and volunteers.
