From the Past: McDermott named CEO of CHC

75 Years Ago

July 3, 1947

Lightning struck and killed Charles Pepple, 38, Cathay farmer, as he was operating his tractor in a field on his farm sometime between 3 and 4 p.m. Monday. His body was found beside the tractor at about 5 p.m. that day.

Marine Private First Class George L. Hayashi, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hayashi of Carrington has been graduated from a Marine combat tank crewman’s course. It was announced at Camp Pendleton.

Sons and daughters of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thos Lutz gathered at the Werner Lutz home near Glenfield Sunday for a reunion of their family. The group assembled included 65 people, nearly all of them children and grandchildren of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lutz.

Carrington cooperated 100 percent in the state air flight of last Saturday and Sunday, being represented in all of the activities of the two days, according to Ray Kadoun, operator of the Carrington airport.

Carrington had two candidates for air queen in a contest which was held at Jamestown Saturday evening. Sylvia Radke was sponsored by the Carrington flying service and Joyce Smith by the American Legion.

Judge James Morris of the North Dakota supreme court, former resident of Carrington, will leave Bismarck sometime next week to take his place as a member of a military tribunal to try war criminals in Nuremberg, Germany.

On Wednesday evening, June 25, the Cathay Pioneer P.T.A. and community gathered at the schoolhouse to pay tribute to Mrs. H.E. Sheard who is retiring from the board of education after serving as director for 24 years. She was presented with a corsage and a purse of money from the local people and a bouquet of flowers from the Wells County school officers.

A special service was held at the Congregational Church, Sykeston, Sunday afternoon in honor of Mrs. Summers, Mrs. Sanderson and daughter Pinky who will be leaving soon to make their home in Bismarck.

June 29, 1972

Parade watchers during Frontier Days witnessed a seeming anachronism ride by - that is, something that properly belongs to another time, another century. A detachment from Gen. George Armstrong Custer’s old unit, the 7th Cavalry, added a touch of historical depth to the parade’s merriment Saturday.

Charter members of Company Care: 1st Lt. Kent Linderman, commanding officer: 1st Sgt. Donald Schmid, Buck Sgt. Neill Lund, Cpl. Larry Schroeder, Cpl. Jarvis Hegland, Cpl. Dennis Montgomery, Pvt. Dwight Montgomery, Pvt. Michael Schmid, Pvt. Allen Schroeder, Pvt. Tom Flegel and Pvt. Dan Flegel. The ranks are earned.

After three weeks of scheduled play, the Woodworth team leads Carrington Softball League with six wins and no losses. Jim’s Standard is second with a 4-1 won-loss record, followed by Cathay 3-2, Augie’s of New Rockford 3-3, Larry’s TV 1-5 and Vets Club 0-6.

Friday was Francis Lee’s last day in the ASCS office. After 31 years of service with ASCS and its predecessors, Lee has relinquished his position as county executive director.

Rondald Larson, a graduate of NDSU with degree in animal science, will judge Shorthorns at the Red River Valley Fair, July 11. Mrs. Larson is the former Renee Cook.

The most common comment concerning crop conditions during the June 20-27 reporting period was,

“We need moisture.” Although subsoil moisture levels are generally adequate, the top-soil supplies have diminished to a point where crops will show adverse effects unless rain is received within a short time.

Larry Lund, a spring graduate of N.D. State University in pharmacy, has begun employment at Lansing, Mich., with Super X Drugs.

June 30, 1997

Brian McDermott has been named president and CEO of Carrington Health Center. He replaces Mike Baumgartner who resigned from the position at the end of last year.

Lunees Masonery of Bottineau has been laying blocks on the foundation for the new entry on the east side of the new city hall.

Yard of the week - June Larson, 311 9th Ave. North has been selected by the Chamber of Commerce.

Northern Plains Electric Cooperative has added Trevor Wick, Woodworth, to its Robinson line crew.

The class of 1977, Carrington High School’s largest class will hold their 20th year reunion at the Vets Club in Carrington this weekend.

Joe Bitz has joined the staff at First American Bank in Carrington as a personal banker and investment counselor.

Around 100 folks enjoyed a spaghetti supper recently held at Kvernes Lutheran Church. $1150 was given in a free will offering to benefit North Dakota flood victims.

Area births - daughter born to Brian and Susan Thomas of Carrington on June 23rd, daughter born to Mary and Wayne Trudeau of Fessenden, June 18th.

Forty golfer from as far away as Bismarck, Fargo, Minot and Crookston, Minn. attended the North Dakota Lumberman’s Gold Tournament held at Carrington’s Country Club.

Dakota Prairie Regional Center for the Arts (DPRCA)is hosting it’s sixth annual summer stock theatre production, Moon Over Buffalo which open July 3rd.
