After a petition to join Fessenden-Bowdon Dist. - Annexation for Seil approved

The Carrington School District will have to function with a little less money from property taxes for the foreseeable future as one district taxpayer has been allowed to annex into the Fessenden-Bowdon School District.

At a special meeting of the Wells County School District Reorganization Committee, Johnson Township property owner Jeremy Seil petitioned the Carrington School District to have his property annexed into the Fessenden-Bowdon School District, as his daughter attends school in Fessenden and believes he shouldn’t have to pay property taxes to Carrington School District.

During the meeting held on June 22 at the Wells County KTL building in Fessenden, Joel Lemer, President of the Carrington Public School District Board of Education and Kimary Edland, Carrington School District Business Manager were in attendance.

Wells County Auditor Dan Stutlien hosted the meeting and answered questions.

Stutlien said the property to be annexed consists of about 12 quarters or roughly 2,000 acres.

Lemer said he understands the situation and isn’t overly concerned.

“It would be different if it were several thousand acres we are talking about annexing in.”

Connie Kunz, who lives in the Northeast corner of Johnson Township said she wants to see the property annexed in to Fessenden-Bowdon School District.

She said when the Sykeston School District dissolved, they had no say about where those children would attend school. “We wanted it to be Fessenden, not Carrington,” said Kunz.

In order for the Seil property to be annexed in to the Fessenden-Bowdon School District, two other properties, belonging to other property owners would also have to be annexed in as well as they are between the Seil property and the school district line.

Stutlien said he is surprised the annexation of the Sykeston School District property owners didn’t happen 20 years ago.

“But whereever you live in North Dakota, you will live in a school district. Someone will always be building a school at some point,” said Stutlien.

After some discussion, a motion was passed to annex in the Seil property to Fessenden-Bowdon School District.
