From Friday, June 24, through Sunday, June 26, a dozen Legion baseball teams from across the region participated in the 2022 Mid-Summer Classic in Jamestown and Valley City.
Nearby teams taking part were New Rockford Post #30 and Carrington Post #25, who both had similarly up-and-down weekends.
On day 1, the Redbirds got off to a hot start against Edgeley Post #146. Carrington scored five runs in the first inning, two more in each of the second and third innings, and capped off their effort with another four runs in the fifth.
On defense the Redbirds held Post #146 to just three runs, one in the second and two in the third, meaning a 10-run mercy rule took effect after five innings to give Post #25 an impressive 13-3 victory.
The following day, however, the Redbirds found themselves on the other end of that mercy rule.
Against the Aces of West Fargo, Carrington's offense simply couldn't hope to keep up with their opponents' offensive onslaught. In a game that only lasted five innings, the Redbirds didn't get a single hit.
The Aces, meanwhile, scored 13 runs on 13 hits in those five innings, while the Redbirds could only score one, which came in inning No. 4 despite not getting a hit.
The loss sent Post #25 to the consolation bracket to battle Langdon, while the Aces moved on to compete for the championship.
Carrington got off to a strong start against Langdon, and looked poised to advance as they opened a 5-0 lead after 3.5 innings. Langdon, however, mounted a debilitating comeback.
In the next three innings, Langdon came all the way back and then some, scoring 12 unanswered runs.
The Redirds attempted a late surge in the seventh, but it was too little too late, and Post #25 was eliminated after a 12-8 defeat.
New Rockford Post #30, meanwhile, lost both of their games on days one and two, keeping them from both the consolation and championship brackets, but managed to defeat the Jamestown Hawks 14-4 on the last day of the tournament.
On Sunday, Valley City Post #60 defeated Casselton Post #15 by a score of 13-1 to take the championship.
