From the Past: Ambulance to celebrate 25th anniversary

75 Years Ago

July 24, 1947

A novelty is in store for baseball fans on Friday evening of this week when “donkey” baseball will be played on the Carrington field. The game is called for 6:30 p.m. Friday, at the west side diamond. The game will be played between the single men and married men of the city. Each player will ride a donkey, and all plays must be executed as the player is astride his animal.

Their studies over and drills completed, members of the Carrington Fire Department’s first aid class was “graduated” last week by C.W. Yoder, instructor.

Developments to assure a growing fair in Foster County came about Tuesday evening at meetings of the Foster County Junior Fair association and related groups.

H.C. Duntley was re-elected president, J.H. Lyman vice president, Geo. Stewart secretary and J.C. Hoffert treasurer, when the fair board met following adjournment of the livestock association.

Rev. C.E. Soderholm, pastor in the Nazarene church of Carrington the past year, will preach his farewell sermon in the church here Sunday, Aug. 3, and he and Mrs. Soderholm will leave the following Monday or Tuesday for a new pastorate at Buffalo Lake, Minn.

Addition for a school of nursing to the University of North Dakota with first classes scheduled in September, has been approved by the state board of higher education. Graduates of the school will receive the degree of bachelor of science in nursing.

Showing the last time at the Grand Theatre tonight is “The Beast With Five Fingers” a horror picture with Robert Alda, Andrea King and Peter Lorre.

Only $21,000 remains to be paid on the Carrington High School building which was erected in 1935, the school board reports.

50 Years Ago

July 20, 1972

Mary Mickels, Carrington High School senior, was winner of first runner-up honors in the Miss Teen-ager for North Dakota contest held

July 14-15 at Aberdeen jointly with the South Dakota competition. A Valley City girl, Bonnie Johnson, was crowned Miss N.D. Teenager and Monica Mertz of Goodrich was named second runner-up for North Dakota.

A train of covered wagons passed through Foster County last week. It had originated at Fort Totten and was retracing the trial between Fort Seward and Fort Totten. It was part of Jamestown’s commemoration of the Fort Seward centennial held last weekend.

Mrs. Otto Klindworth of Carrington was injured in a highway accident near Pingree Monday afternoon and is hospitalized at Jamestown. Her granddaughter, Janelle Wahlund, who was with Mrs. Klindworth, was not injured.

Four area students have been named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester at Lake Region Junior College. They are: Neal Lundby, Sykeston; Kent Ableidinger, Kensal; Donald Irmen, Cathay and Michael Stahl, Binford. Kenneth Montgomery, a local farmer and member of the Carrington Church of the Nazarene, was elected to the district advisory board of the Dakota district at the annual assembly of the district which met July 6-7 in Jamestown.

Marvin Hass has been promoted by Production Credit Association and will be leaving Carrington. He will work on the PCA main office in Minot as Agrifax coordinator. Agrifax is computer record keeping.

Karen Schultz and Joel Rindy were married Saturday evening, July 15 in Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. James Schoeld officiating at the double ring ceremony.

25 Years Ago

July 21, 1997

Wet conditions in recent weeks slowed AgGrows construction but John Gardner, general manager, said the lost time has been made up with the drier weather. Gardner said the pre-cast building will be ready to erect the first week in August.

There will be a community celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Carrington Ambulance. The event is scheduled for Sunday, August 10th from 1-4 p.m. in the city park. There will be a potluck picnic. Included in the celebration will be certificates and awards for charter members, years of service awards and appreciations to businesses who allow employees to take time to respond to ambulance calls.

Work is progressing on Carrington’s new city hall. Workers from Klocke Construction had the walls and rafters up last week. The new facility will be ready for occupancy this fall.

Michelle Hayes is the new administrative assistant at the Carrington Area Chamber of Commerce. She began her duties July 19 and replaces Renae Filler.

Forty members of the Carrington FFA Chapter exhibited in the Agricultural Mechanics division of the Foster County fair held in Carrington, June 26-28. There were a total of 79 agricultural mechanics exhibits. The Chapter earned 54 blue ribbons and 25 red ribbons.

Area births - daughter to Alejandro and Sandra Garcia of Carrington, July 9; son to David and Karen Anderson of New Rockford, July 10; daughter to Bobbi Jo Sinkler and Jon Curylo of New Rockford, July 15.

Katie Hart received Champion in Class and overall Grand Champion for her baby calf at the Wells County fair. She is a member of the Bowdon Blazers 4-H Club. She is the daughter of Corey and LeAnn Hart, Chaseley.

Sykeston Community will be having Appreciation Days on Saturday, July 26 with a street dance featuring “Gun Shy” and a picnic in the park catered by Mar-Don’s.
