Baseball Roundup: Carrington Post 25 and Babe Ruth hit tourney seasons

The regular season is in the books for both Carrington American Legion Post 25 and Carrington Babe Ruth Redbirds.

The Legion team finished their slate of District 4 games with wins of 9-2 over the Jamestown Hawks on July 6, and 12-2 against the Nelson County Post 162 Owls on July 12.

In between, the 25's faced some stiff competition at the Phil Brown Classic in Jamestown on Saturday and Sunday, July 9-10. There, they dropped 8-2 decisions to the Bismarck Governors and 6-1 to Perham, Minn.

Lucas Hendrickson picked up the win against the Hawks with four innings of one-run baseball. Grady Shipman went 4-for-4 and was just a home run short of hitting for the cycle with two RBIs. Trent Ekren also added a 3-for-4 afternoon, also driving in two.

Taking on the Owls, Shipman did it all with his right arm and his bat, throwing six frames with six strikeouts, and keeping the theme going, scattering six hits. He also had two hits, including a double, and a pair of RBIs.

Hudson Schmitz drove in two runs with a double, and Jake Otto also scored twice and plated two runs.

At the Phil Brown, Jack Erickson had a solid day at the plate against Bismarck, going 3-for-4. Hendrickson, who took the loss on the hill, also had two hits and Schmitz another double.

Post 25 stayed close with Perham until the sixth inning, when the boys from lake country scored four runs to blow the game open.

Shipman and Hendrickson each had two hits, and Schmitz was the losing pitcher.

Carrington will not know their seeding at the District 4 Tournament in Jamestown July 18-21 until several makeup games have been played, the last one coming this past Friday.

The first game at Jack Brown Stadium starts today (July 18) at 4:30 p.m. with the #4/#5 seeds squaring off, followed by the #3/#6 game at 6:30.

The winner of the 4:30 game takes on the top seed at 12 noon Tuesday, with the 6:30 victor playing the #2 seed at 2 p.m. Action for that day follows with two loser-out games at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.

The tournament continues to Thursday, July 21, and the winner advances to the State B Tournament in Garrison July 28-Aug. 1.

With the final games of play, the Redbirds will enter the District 6 Tournament in Oakes July 14-17 as the number five seed, with a 6-6 overall record.

Carrington dropped a 12-7 decision to league top seed Edgeley on July 6, then righted the ship with wins of 12-2 over Gwinner July 11 and 14-1 against Oakes the next day.

The District 6 Tourney begins with #1 Edgeley taking on the winner of the Gwinner/Ellendale play-in game on July 14 at 10 a.m. Carrington takes on #4 Ashley/Linton/Wishek 30 minutes after the first game, with #2 LaMoure and #7 Steele to follow and #3 Lisbon/#6 Oakes after that.

The first loser-out game (Game 5) will actually be the final game of the day on July 14.

An elimination game starts play on July 15 as well, beginning at 10 a.m. That will be followed by the first and second winner's bracket semifinals, and two more loser-out games.

The winner's bracket championship starts at 11 a.m. on July 16, with that game's winner advancing to the championship game on July 17 and gaining two shots to advance to the State B Tournament in Beulah July 23-27. The other two elimination games are slated to follow.
