CHS girls' golf coach Wayne Shipman gives a few pointers to junior varsity golf team prospect Aniston Hoornaert on the first hole during the second practice of the season last Tuesday.
Carrington's girls golf program achieved an eighth place finish last fall at the State 'B' Golf Tournament, and the team is primed to be another player in the Region 2 mix.
Under the tutelage of second-year Coach Wayne Shipman, the Cards made strides throughout the year in shooting consistent rounds, and a good young class of golfers coming up is cause for optimism.
The top returner is junior Kacie Rexin. She was the lone state qualifier by automatic score, and finished second at the regional and 13th at the state tournament. Her score of 173 (91-82) over 36 holes was just seven strokes out of All-State designation.
The Cards will have to replace two varsity starters who were lost to graduation, Dawsyn Anderson and Lauren Skadberg.
Incumbents in the CHS lineup, along with Rexin, include freshman Aubrey Neis (ninth at Region 2, 62nd at State as an eighth grader), senior Kaley Kostelnik and junior Sage Patzer.
Senior Carrie Hovdenes has a decent shot to crack the starting six, and juniors Madison Johnson and Sydney Friedt and freshman Molly Hansen will also be in contention for varsity slots.
Arick Scherr is the assistant coach for the girls' team this fall.
As it usually pans out, Kindred and Oak Grove will be two of the Region 2 teams expected to advance to the state meet. CHS has proven themselves as a solid third team with a chance to overtake second place in the region race, like they nearly did last season.
This year's State Class B Tournament will be held at Souris Valley Golf Course in Minot September 26-27.
