Carrington FFA places 2nd at state land judging

The Carrington FFA Land Evaluation Team of Brekka Kuss, Joe Lindberg, and Emma Aberle placed second at the State FFA Land Evaluation Career Development Event held in Harvey, Thursday, August 4.

Individually, Joe Lindberg placed fifth and Brekka Kuss placed ninth, both receiving gold awards. Emma Aberle placed 33rd, receiving a bronze individual award. A total of fifty-three FFA members from ten chapters participated in the event.

In the land evaluation event, contestants determine surface soil texture, permeability, depth of soil, slope, present surface soil thickness, past erosion, wind erosion hazard, water erosion hazard, saltiness, and surface runoff to determine a land capability class.

Once the land capability class is determined, the contestants suggest vegetative treatments, mechanical treatments, and fertility recommendations to make the land more productive, but also to conserve the land. The contestants evaluate a total of four "sites" in the contest.
