From the Past: Zink wins hog calling contest at fair

September 25, 1947

Foster County’s new fairground buildings were dedicated “to the future growth of 4-H work, to the building back of North Dakota’s livestock and to the young people interested in the development of agriculture,” when a dedicatory program was held Tuesday afternoon during the Foster County Junior Fair.

A baby boy was born September 19 at Carrington Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Morlock, Sykeston.

Rev. E.D. Nelson is the new pastor in the Carrington Church of the Nazarene. He came here from Morris, Ill., and was installed at services in the church last Sunday.

After the close of the dedication ceremonies at the Foster County Fair Tuesday, a hog calling contest was held in the exhibit tent, with eight entrants, all men. Winners in the contest were Virgil Zink first, Clarence Stedman second and Walter Larson third.

Foster County 4-H club girls will be represented by three girls from Grace City in the state 4-H girls revue to be held later this fall at Valley City as the result of judging at the county revue held at the Carrington School gymnasium Tuesday evening. The three girls to represent the county were announced Wednesday morning by Miss Julia Brekke, judge and supervisor of the revue. They are Dee Willoughby, Betty Topp and Erma Posey, all of Grace City.

A full list of officers is now functioning in the Carrington Parent-Teachers Association, following the business session last Wednesday night. The new officers are H.G. Kraus, president; Charles Kahl, vice president; Marjorie Buchanan, secretary, and Theo Ramsey, treasurer (re-elected).

On Friday, Sept. 19, an informal open house was held for Mrs. T.H. Cousins Sr., on her 81st birthday anniversary. Her two granddaughters, Mrs. Philip Belanger and Marydee Peik, served refreshments and birthday cake.

September 21, 1972

A public auction is set for Oct. 16 at Carrington that will mark end of operation of a large, highly developed N.D. seed business by its longtime owner-operator, Ohio Kindworth. Kindworth has long been associated in the seed business with Norman Wahlund, vice president, and Magnus (Mike) Johnson, secretary of the seed corporation. Wahlund has also managed Central Steel Building & Construction, an affiliate business, which will continue.

The following members of Foster County NFO were selected as delegates to East District Convention at the regular convention meeting held in the Chieftain Motor Lodge Sept. 15; Allen Palmer, Ken Spitzer, Milton Walen, Bob Anderson, Russell Zink, Earl Hart, Vern Hoggarth, Larry Quesenberry and Maxine Spitzer.

A once in a lifetime experience for a golfer happened to Mel Zaun on the Carrington Golf Club course Sunday - a hole in one. Zaun hit a perfect drive with a three iron on the 138-yard No. 6. His wife, who was playing with him, remarked that it appeared that he would have a short putt. Several local men playing on the nearby No. 5 green observed Zaun’s ball roll in to the cup and fall in.

The resignation of Larry Metcalfe from the Carrington Elementary School staff was accepted shortly before opening of school. Metcalfe has taken a position with Horace Mann Educators Insurance Co., stationed in Carrington.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Anderson, Grace City, announce the engagement of their daughter Barbara, to Calvin Oten, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Oten, Binford.

Robert James Clifton and Margaret (Peggy) Theis were married Aug. 26 at 11 a.m. in St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Sykeston.

Mr. and Mrs. Roger Kolpin are now residing at Wahpeton where both are attending State School of Science. Their marriage took place in a double ring ceremony held Aug. 18 at Glenfield Lutheran Church.

September 22, 1997

A project that took over a year to construct by members of the Piecemakers Quilt Guild was turned over to the Carrington Research Center. The design, depicting agriculture in the area was created by individual members sewing blocks with seven placing the product into a quilt.

The Foster County Commissioners have been working on a new budget for road repairs prioritizing a 10 mile stretch of pavement running through Grace City from the Eddy County line to the junction of N.D. 200 after completion of the current Kensal road project. The project involves major repairs to a nine mile stretch from Kensal north to Highway 200.

Julie Scheen has joined the staff of the Foster County Independent. Her experience includes both daily and weekly papers in North Dakota, Arizona and Wyoming.

“North Dakota Outdoors television program recently took first place honors in the National Association for Conservation Information annual competition for a video entry called “Young Duck” about a 11-year-old boy on his first hunt.

Carrington High School art students spent about two weeks painting the grass on the football field in preparation for homecoming. The Cardinal logo was painted at mid-field, while the letters “CHS” were painted in the end zones. One of the more difficult aspects of the project was finding non-toxic red paint.

The 50th wedding anniversary of Leonard and Ann Geske was observed on July 5th at the Geske Ranch.

Mavis Miller, Jennifer Vinnard and Nikole Zieman were the 1997 recipients of the Carrington Health Center Auxiliary Leadership Awards.

A donation of $5000 from the Modern Woodmen of America following a fund raising project was delivered to Carrington Volunteer Fire Department.
