75 Years Ago

October 2, 1947

The Carrington High School Cardinals opened the football season on the home field, under lights Friday night, by defeating the Rockets of New Rockford 19 - 0. The Cardinal line held the Rockets back, only once allowing the visitors to come within 5 yards of the goal line. The Cardinal scores were made in the second, third and fourth quarters.

All Carrington Hospital drive funds from the city of Carrington are to be turned in at a meeting of solicitors tonight, it was stated Monday night by executive Secretary Paul Cruchet at a solicitor’s session at the city hall. Some of the teams had failed to complete their canvass by Monday, and they were given a few more days to complete the job.

4-H girls presented a dress revue at McHenry School under the direction of Mesdames George E. Peterson and Arthur Midgley. Several dirndl shirts, blouses, aprons and a few dresses were modeled. Irene Hoffman and Barbara Midgley of the upper grades modeled two unusually nice dresses.

Purchase of the interests of G.A. Skjonsby and Fran L. Cowing of Chicago in Carrington Motor Company by C.H. Hunstad was announced Saturday, just two days after the company had observed its 30th anniversary. Negotiations for the deal were begun on the anniversary date, Hunstad said.

A new type of helicopter with five seats and an operating speed of 90 miles an hour, a range of 300 miles, and a vertical-climb rate of 450 feet a minute has just been built for the Air Force and is now undergoing preliminary testing.

September 28, 1972

Carrington folks had reason to take issue with the calendar Monday as snow fell three days after the official beginning of autumn. This is not supposed to happen while many of the trees are still green.

Cargill, Inc., is building a fertilizer blend plant at the elevator here. Maurice Moen, elevator manager, said the plant will be completed this fall. “We’ll be able to custom blend fertilizers - give a customer whatever he needs,” he said.

The Carrington High School concert choir is presently rehearsing the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, “Oklahoma,” which will be performed on Saturday, Oct. 21 and Monday, Oct. 23 in the high school gym. Four of the leading roles have been double casted which permits more students to have a major role. Olaf Ringerud, director of the production, said.

S-sgt. Kenneth R. Lura was named Wing Safety Man of the Month at the Air Force Base at Phoenix, Ariz., where he is a member of the 58th Organizational Maintenance Squadron.

Grace City girls’ basketball team defeated their first two foes, Sykeston and Tolna 18-17 and 35-18.

An open house for Golden Acres Manor will be held on Oct. 5 from 2 - 5 p.m. to show off a new look that they have. “The 31-year old facility needed a facelift,” Allen Metzger, Golden Acres administrator had said. The 1.5 million dollar project features a new lobby area inside the west entrance, a new wing attached to the dining room containing 13 new private rooms, an overflow dining area, chapel and new bathing rooms on each wing, new employee and service entrances and a heated inside entrance area for loading and unloading residents.

Northern Excavating removed the blacktop to replace the sewer line on Main Street west of the tracks. The street, once served as U.S. Highway 52 and N.D. 200, had 9 inches of blacktop over 8 inches of cement. This is one of 32 blocks in the city that is being repaired with water or sewer line and will be completed this fall.

Ronald Schumacher of Sykeston, was airlifted to Merit-Care Hospital in Fargo on Thursday afternoon after an accident on Highway 200 three miles west of Glenfield. He was driving westbound in an Oldsmobile that apparently crossed the center line and collided with a Dodge dually pickup pulling a flatbed trailer. There were no passengers in either vehicle and the drivers name was unavailable at press time.

Sykeston Homecoming king candidates included Travis Ripplinger, Bill Winandy, Dominic Larson and Darin Swenson. Queen candidates were Shanna Seil, Ami Zwinger, Amber Bursau and Jill Kartes.

Suzie Lura and Dustin Garber were crowned queen and king during the CHS Homecoming coronation September 18. Following a week of events, the event was capped off with a football victory over Enderlin.

Area births - girl, Ann Catherine born to Greg and Jody Endres on September 18, 7 pounds 15.5 ounces.

Chester Schmidt, New Rockford, is the proud new owner of a 1956 International pumper fire-truck that he won at the annual Eve of Autumn celebration in Woodworth on September 20.
