Medina/Pingree-Buchanan played some of their best volleyball of the season over the span of a few Saturday hours, and brought home some shiny medals as a result of it.
The Thunder went 5-1 at the Valley City Optimist Tournament Saturday, September 17, to take second place overall and improve to 10-6 for the fall campaign.
M-P-B's lone loss in the six matches came to unbeaten Northern Cass in the championship, by a very respectable final tally of 25-20 in both sets.
On their way to the finals, M-P-B took a split set win over LaMoure/Litchville-Marion in Pool D, and straight set triumphs against Four Winds-Minnewaukan and Glen Ullin-Hebron. They then moved to bracket play, where they took 2-0 wins over traditionally-strong Minot Our Redeemer's and Central Cass before falling to the Jaguars for the crown.
In Pool A, Carrington had a very similar route through round robin action. The Cards split with Park River/Fordville-Lankin, but won on points, and defeated Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter and Barnes County North.
Their stay in Valley City was short-lived, however, as Shiloh Christian outlasted CHS in a tense three-set battle, 19-25, 25-23 and 13-15, to eliminate the Cards in the first round. Following play, Carrington's record sat at 7-2 overall.
Griggs/Midkota was the third local team to participate at the Optimist. Pool F scores for the Titans were not available at press time, but they lost in three sets to Edgeley-Kulm/Montpelier (25-22, 23-25, 12-15) in the first round of the consolation tournament bracket.
