Cards take 8th in team race

As the third team qualifier out of the loaded Region 2, Carrington's expectations vacillated between no pressure, and anxiousness from one particular golfer to show her mettle among the state's best.

By that measure, the 2022 State Class B Girls Golf Tournament, held at Minot's Souris Valley Golf Course, ended up being a good showing for the Cards, with an eighth place team score of 784.

Leading the charge for CHS was junior Kacie Rexin, with her two-day total of 160 tying her for fourth place along with Ellie Nicholas of North Star and Emma Ketterling of Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter.

With that showing, Rexin earned All-State recognition, which goes to the top 10 individual golfers at the meet.

Other Cardinal golfers to compete in Minot included Aubrey Neis, who placed 45th (95-97-202), Molly Hansen (64th, 100-112-202), Kaley Kostelnik (70th, 111-104-215), Sage Patzer (77th, 111-107-218) and Carrie Hovdenes (112th, 129-128-257).

Fargo Oak Grove Lutheran won the second state team title in school history by just one shot over Heart River (Belfield/South Heart), 713-714. Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter was third at 716, then Kindred (721) and Des Lacs-Burlington (742) in the top five. The Cards were only 13 strokes back of sixth-place Grafton.

For the third year in a row, Avery Bartels of Kindred captured state medalist honors. This year's tourney for Bartels was a dominant one over the Souris Valley course, as she was the only golfer to shoot under par by carding scores of 69 and 73 over the two days (142) to win by six shots over Grafton's Ainsley McLain at 148.

Lauryn Keller of Des Lacs-Burlington finished in third at 159, one shot ahead of the Rexin/Nicholas/Ketterling trio.

Rounding out the All-State honorees were Libby Dulmage of Rugby in seventh (163), Trista Bilden of Hatton-Northwood in eighth (165), Sophie Ketterling of NGS in ninth (166) and Sophie Brantner of Oak Grove (169) in 10th.
