From the Past: Garrison Diversion dedicated Sunday

October 23, 1947

Large scale production of the Steinman Improved Swather will get underway this fall and winter after the construction of a new building on the west side of the present headquarters of the Steinman Improved Swather Manufacturing Co. (Foster County Vulcanizing and Repair Shop), of which Leo E. Steinman is proprietor.

At the last meeting of the Central North Dakota Schoolmaster’s club at New Rockford, the group heard an address by Don Holland, a member of the staff of Senator Milton Young. Election of officers took place, with the following results: President, Noralf Nessett, Fort Totten, succeeding E.G. Krille, Fessenden; vice president, Minard McCrea, succeeding F. Ray Rogers, formerly of Carrington; secretary-treasurer, N.H. Hanson, Carrington, succeeding E.C. Blackorby, New Rockford.

Allan Trullinger has been named chairman of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, committee in charge of the annual JC Halloween party which is scheduled for the night of October 31. Others on the committee are Roy Solberg, Mollie Clapp, R.F. Marcussen, Laverne Kuehn, B.A. Schmidt and Clifford Hill. They will assist with arrangements for the party and in directing games and stunts.

They were in complete charge throughout the game, from the opening kick-off to the end, the Carrington Cardinals spoiled an otherwise perfect homecoming day for New Rockford High School there last Friday night, when the Rockets went down to a decisive defeat 25 to 0, the Cardinals scoring a touchdown in each quarter.

Miss Charlotte Hanson became the bride of Dallas Edinger Sunday, October 12 in the Heaton Lutheran Church. Rev. Erling Aarthun read the service, Mrs. Aarthun rendered the wedding music and sang “O Perfect Love” and “O Happy Home” during the ceremony.

October 18, 1972

Garrison Diversion Conservancy District directors sat down at the new U-shaped conference table Monday as the first order of business in the newly dedicated headquarters building.

Many Carrington people and visitors had their first look at the impressive, modern structure following the dedication ceremonies Sunday. The building, although structurally finished, will continue to receive additions of equipment and expanded operations as work on the Garrison Diversion unit progresses.

Reuel Harrison, manager of Foster County Co-op Credit Union, was elected to yet another office when delegates attended the 36th annual meeting of N.D. Credit Union League at Dickinson, Friday and Saturday. Harrison was elected secretary of the association. He continues as secretary of the N.D. Central Credit Union, which also had its annual meeting at Dickinson.

Plans for the construction of a building for the Foster County Historical Society took a step forward when a site for the proposed building was agreed upon. According to the Historical Society president Hugh Putnam, the building will be located on the fairgrounds in Carrington. The site is approximately two blocks long and is located north of the fair building. The Foster County Commissioners have approved the location, according to Putnam.

Otter Tail Power Company, Fergus Falls, has announced that a new home economist has joined the staff of its home service department. Irene Johnson, a native of Courtenay and recent Montana State graduate, will be stationed at the company’s North Dakota headquarters in Jamestown.

Faith Lutheran Church, West Fargo, was the scene of the marriage of Mary L. Schmit and Sherman E. Waagen. Pastor Rusley and Father Allen Villes officiated at the interfaith double ring ceremony.

October 20, 1997

The old city hall walls came down on Friday (Oct. 10). It took approximately an hour to create a pile of rubble. City crews spent last week removing the cement and bricks from the building that was built in 1911. The site will create a new parking lot.

A new bowling center planned for Carrington will be the “best of the best” says Rhonda Stone. In the works is a total inside remodeling of the former Jack and Jill grocery store on Main Street, which the Stones are in the process of purchasing from Ron Wenaas. There is a projected April 1, 1998 opening date, the Stones are planning a six-lane bowling center, complete with a bar and restaurant, Ronda Stone said.

Rob Manly is a new attorney in Carrington working at the Noack Law Office. Manly is a New Rockford native.

New arrivals - girl, Brenna Marie, parents Scott and Dawn Dieterle, Carrington, born October 12 at Carrington Health Center. Boy, Shae Alan born October 6 to Scott and Shannon Mehring, Carrington.

Six new faculty are at CHS high and elementary, new teachers include Melinda Richter, Jan Hochhalter, LeAnn Brandt, Layne Smith, Kerri Townsend and Bradley Townsend.

In an effort to “get active in the community,” Lois Lutman decided in 1970 to join the local McCreary-Bonderud Veterans of Foreigh Wars Ladies’ VFW Auxiliary. Twenty-seven years later, Lutman has been elected the state president of the VFW Auxiliary, the first-ever Carrington member to do so.

Brazilian foreign exchange student, Arnaldo Viana from Fortalez, Brazil is spending a year in Carrington. He is staying with the Gary Anderson family. Brazil is hot. He said that school runs only 5 hours a day from 7:15 to 12:15, that way the extreme heat of midday can be avoided. Some of the differences between Brazil and Carrington is the extreme heat, teachers in schools change classrooms instead of students, and the lessons in Brazil are much harder then in this country. Arnaldo wants to learn more about American culture and the different places in the country.
