Hornets defeat Chargers; 0-4 at CHS

The Harvey-Wells County girls' volleyball team picked up a big Region 4 victory on Thursday, October 6, in McVille as they defeated the Nelson County Chargers 3-1.

The Hornets also participated in a very competitive Carrington Tourney on Saturday, October 8, where they were defeated four times.

HWC 3, Nelson Co. 1

It was a solid start to the night for the home team, as the Chargers, behind an ace from Brandi Lippert and a kill from Rylan Parsley, opened up a quick 7-1 lead. The Hornets fought their way back into the game and with Larissa Arnold serving, scored nine straight points behind two aces from Arnold and two kills from Emma Dockter lifting HWC to a 13-8 lead. Two kills from Ashley Keller and two more from Rachel Neumiller kept the Hornet net attack strong, lifting HWC to a 25-13 game one victory.

The Hornets got a nice team effort to start game two with kills from Aubree Wolfe, Dockter, Keller, Arnold and Neumiller as HWC moved out early to a 12-6 lead. The host team had a nice comeback and with the help of three straight kills from Brandi Lippert closed the gap to just three points. Lippert added another kill to cut the lead to two, and Sydnee Johnston's kill moved the Chargers into a 15-14 lead. The Nelson County lead grew to 24-17 behind another Johnston kill. HWC had a little fight left in them, as an Arnold ace and kill was followed up by a Neumiller kill to cut the lead to 24-23, but the Chargers secured the final point to claim game two.

The Hornets kept the momentum from the end of game two and jumped out to a commanding 12-2 lead in game three. Two kills and two aces from Parsley helped the Chargers stay close, as they cut the lead to 17-12. A Neumiller ace and a kill from Dockter gave the Hornets a boost as HWC went on for a 25-17 game three win.

The deciding game of the night involved another strong start for HWC, as Dockter added two kills and Keller chipped in with two more, giving the Hornets an early 9-3 lead. Johnston and Parsley kept the Chargers close, as two kills from each moved the score back to 11-9. Neumiller, Wolfe, Arnold and Keller added kills for the visitors as they bumped their lead to 19-12. A Johnston ace helped Nelson County pull back to within 22-19, but the Hornets finished out game four with a 25-19 victory and 3-1 match win.

Dockter and Neumiller had 12 kills each and Keller added 11 more for HWC as Kali Fike dished out 31 assists in the match. Larissa Arnold's serving gave the Hornets some major momentum during the night as the senior notched four aces. Neumiller had 24 digs to lead HWC in that category.

The Chargers were led by Brandi Lippert with 10 kills and Johnston with nine. Riley Lippert had 21 digs and Nevaeh Huso led with 24 assists. Parsley had eight kills and eight aces on the night.

Carrington Tourney

The Hornet netters traveled to Carrington to participate in the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday, October 8.

The Hornets opened up play against Carrington, dropping the match in two sets. HWC then played Hettinger-Scranton and Velva, dropping both matches, and faced Hettinger-Scranton again in pool play, dropping the match, 2-0, to end their day.
