From the Past: Charity Ball held in Carrington

75 Years Ago

November 6, 1947

Sale of registered Polled Shorthorns last Friday at the first annual North Dakota sale sponsored by the state Polled Shorthorn Breeder Association, held in the fairgrounds barns Carrington, grossed $13,365, for the 40 lots consigned.

Everything but the weather was perfect for the Carrington High School homecoming day last Friday, and even the weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the students and alumni. A large crowd of high school students and alumni attended the Homecoming party in the evening, when crowning of the queen was the featured event. Miss Lois Indergaard was officially crowned by Gordon Turner, captain of the football team. Her attendants were Beverly Brennen, senior, and Eileen Zink, junior, who had been queen candidates. A bouquet of cut flowers was also presented to Miss Indergaard.

Sgt. Francis “Toby” Lawlor, representing the U.S. Army recruiting office, Jamestown, will be at the Veterans’ clubroom. Carrington, Friday, November 7, 1 to 5 p.m. to issue defense and victory medals to all veterans of the Army and Army Air Forces.

The Grand Theatre schedule for the week follows: Tonight, “Blondie’s Holiday.” with Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake. Friday and Saturday, “The Sea Hawk,” with Errol Flynn. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Joan Crawford and Van Heflin in “Possessed.” Next week Wednesday and Thursday, “The Private Affairs of Bel Ami.” with Geo Sanders, Angela Lansbury and Ann Dvorak.

Promoted to the rank of private first class last month were eleven members of the Carrington National Guard Company, officially known as Company F, it was announced this week by Capt. Alvin A. Paulson. The new PFC’s are John Brandt, Donald Herman, Raymond Imler, Harold Kraus, Lawerence Kunz, William Lofstedt, Hesea Page, Gerald Pierson, Winnifred Shelly, Donald Thiesen and Gordon Turner.

November 8, 1972

No cause has been determined for a fire that destroyed a grain dryer owned by Farmers Elevator in Grace City, Nov. 1. The dryer was a complete loss according to manager Orrin Topp. It was valued at $16,000.

A change in management at Carrington Livestock Sales, Inc. has been announced by Tom Rothschiller, president of the concern. Rothschiller has assumed management of the firm following his recent purchase of ownership shares from Dan Genre. Genre has been general manager of the sales ring since 1970. He will remain with the business as a field representative until spring. He has tentative plans to purchase a sales barn in a southern state.

A bright future with an even greater potential for cattle feeding in North Dakota is predicted for the state’s livestock industry by local cattle feeder, Lloyd Butts in “New Nuggets,” feed journal published at West Fargo by Gold Label Feeds, Inc.

Three area young people were among the 53 students who preformed in the first appearance of the semester of the Jamestown College Concert Band on Nov. 10 in Vorhees Chapel.

The first Charity Ball held in Carrington was termed a success by its local organizers. 150 people attended the festive event at the Carrington Golf Club. The Charity Ball is an annual event which has been held the past years in New Rockford. Funds raised by the ball contributed to the Midway Association for Retarded Children.

Mr. and Mrs. Darrell F. Hanson of Sykeston announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Sandra Kay, to Curtis L. Erickson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Erickson, Bowman, N.D.

Holly Clark was honored at a bridal shower held Sunday at the Charles Schock home.

The office part of AgGrow Oils business office should be operational this week.

Dale Klein has sold his interest in Carrington’s Super 8 Motel to Paul and Christy Reimer. Frank Klein will retain his ownership in the motel, Christy Reimer has been managing the motel for the past two years.

The Carrington FFA chapter will be competing November 13th in the National FFA Farm Business Management Career Development event in Kansas City, Mo. Members of the team include Brian Walker, Nick Doeling, Matt Odenbach and Paula Walker. The team is coached by Mr. Joel Lemer

Thatiana Junqueira of Sao Paulo, Brazil is the 4th highlighted foreign exchange student to attend Carrington High School. She is residing with Tom and Della Friezen of Carrington. She had a hard time adjusting to school lockers and the cold weather, both unknown to her. She likes, “the students here but I feel the small town causes the kids to be more drawn to the friends they have known all along.” She does like the feeling of more security. Sao Paolo has “A lot of murders. It’s scary. There’s a lot of unemployment. There’s a lot of poor in Sao Paulo. They need education, but the poverty is hard to solve.” she says.

Area births - boy, Conner Shane, born to Shane and Mary Wendel, Carrington, 8 lbs. 1 oz.

Byron Hoeckle of Midkota was named District 8 Coach of the Year.

For the sixth time in the past seven years, the Midkota Mustangs captured the District 8 championship and will be the top district seed at the region 4 tournament being played at New Rockford.
