From the Past: Voglewede opens her third store

75 Years Ago

November 27, 1947

Opening the season at McClusky Tuesday night, the Carrington High School cardinal basketball team was defeated 37 - 27 by the McClusky High School quintet. Mrs. L.E. Greitl, Carrington, will be delegate from Foster County to the North Dakota Homemakers council meeting at NDAC December 2 to 4 for the annual conference on homemakers club programs and activities for the year.

Mrs. Irvin Huff, Mrs. J.J. Held and Mrs. Jacob Haas entertained 19 guests at a bridal shower honoring Miss Elva Hjelseth on Friday evening at the Haas home. On Thursday evening she was also honored when Mrs. Gustav Miller, Mrs. Eilert Hjelseth and Mrs. Russell Schutt entertained for her at the Hjelseth home. Gifts were presented to her and lunch was served.

Harold Kraus went to Steele Sunday to assist in the organization of a youth center there. Kraus acted in his capacity as director of organization of the North Dakota Teen-Canteen Association.

Legion Auxiliary will meet Thursday, Dec. 4, in place of Wednesday as scheduled. The meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. F.B. Peik and her assisting hostesses will be Mmes. A.H. Ebentier, F.E. Zink, B. Schroeder, Louis Lund and W. Willyard. A rehabilitation and Christmas program with carol singing has been planned. Mrs. P.P. Zink is chairman and Mrs. H.G. Kraus and Mrs. J.C. Dybwad assistants. Osbourne Belsheim, high school music instructor, will appear on the program as a soloist.

Several babies were born at Carrington Hospital Nov. 19-24. They include; boy to Mr. and Mrs. Wm Briss, Jr., Kensal; Boy to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Nicholson, Carrington; boy to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lange, Carrington and a girl to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Balvitsch, Sykeston.

Mr. and Mrs. F.C. Johnson entertained the Sunday nighters at their home Sunday evening. Following a dinner, bridge was played with prizes going to Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Roney, Dr. W.C. Voglewede and Mrs. Norton Stangeland.

50 Years Ago

November 29, 1972

Fifty women and 79 men took part in bowling Nov. 13-19 at Lucky Lanes at Carrington for benefit of the Heart Fund. Gerald Paulson topped the men with 668 and Bev Erickson was high among women with a total 651. The scores include handicaps. Dorothy DeBolt is Heart Fund Chairman for Carrington Bowling Association.

County chairman Allen Palmer of Glenfield will head a delegation of Foster County people to attend the national convention of the National Farmers Organization in Kansas City, Dec. 13-15. Other delegates include Ken Spitzer, Christ Klein, Milton Walen, Bernard Kramer, Vern Hoggarth, Irvin Topp, Earl Hart and LeRoy Erickson. Alternate delegates are Betty Klein, Maxine Spitzer, Esther Scanson, Odes Scanson, Eilert Hjelseth, Russell Zink, Larry Quesenberry and Glen Lindstrom.

A local business has changed hands as Lloyd Case, formerly of Fargo, has purchased the Thomas J. Rothschiller Accounting Co. The transaction was finalized Nov. 15, although Case has been at work here since the beginning of the month.

Larry’s TV on Carrington’s Main Street is celebrating its second grand opening of 1972. The second celebration promises to be even grander than the first and occupied its completely revamped quarters in what was formerly known as the Olaf and Pat building.

Robert L. Swartout, formerly a Carrington resident, has been promoted to a staff position in the Seattle Fire Department, he is now battalion deputy chief.

The 1972-73 basketball season will open Friday for the Carrington Cardinals as they travel to Park River for their initial contest.

Neal Lund is this year’s county delegate to national 4-H Club Congress which is being held in Chicago.

Army Private James. D. Strong, 17, of Pingree has completed eight weeks of basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.

December 1, 1997

Foster County’s unemployment rate has dropped to 1.1 percent and expected to drop to under 1 percent for October according to Jamestown Job Service. The average 1996 unemployment rate in the county was 2.7 percent.

Matt Larson has been chosen as one of 26 players statewide to represent North Dakota at the Boys of Summer baseball tournament at Cooperstown Dreams, Park, NY next summer. He is the son of Delmae and Ron Larson, Carrington.

Leann Voglewede of rural Carrington has opened her third Garden Gate store in Fargo. She opened her store the day after Thanksgiving.

The Carrington Country Club was designated as “Business of the Quarter” by the Carrington Area Chamber of Commerce for the third quarter, 1997.

Mary Harvala of Carrington will perform during a recital on Monday, Dec. 1 at the United Presbyterian Church in Jamestown. She will perform a variety of songs on the church organ by J.S. Bach, Joseph Haydn and Olivier Messiaen.

Caroline Golz, an employee at Seaburg Drug, was named the employee of the month for November.

Sykeston High School’s drama team placed 4th at the state one-act play competition on Nov. 24 in Bismarck. They performed the children’s theater piece “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The play was directed by Michele Lukenbach who received Region V Best Director award.

Playing at the Youth Center Theatre this weekend “Kiss the Girls” starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd.

Twenty-five young people attended a snowmobile safety course last Tuesday night under the direction of Dakota Country Blasters Snowmobile Club. Club member Richard Zink explained several of the parts of the machines to 12-15 year olds who are required by law to take the course in order to drive the machines.
